My January sowing list consists of sprouting seeds, microgreens, salads and tomato Shirley. It is a toss up what gets sown first as I have just sown both lettuces and microgreens and I'm likely to put more seeds to sprout before the end of December. Last year the tomatoes were sown on 11th January.
The lettuces and microgreens are grown in the grow light garden, the sprouting seeds on the kitchen worktop. The idea is to always have enough to make a lunchtime salad or sandwich.
I sow 2 tomato seeds, grow them under the lights until they get too tall, then put them on the sitting room windowsill, where they will stay for the whole year. The first tomato is usually ready in June.
New years day will be my banana shallots and ailsa craig onions ( both seeds) into module trays, cos i want too .
couple of weeks later will start thinking about my chillis, not too sure if im gonna try any superhots yet so better get thinking about it .Alzo because i want too
Maybe leeks in January, sweet peppers at the end of February, tomatoes & loads of seeds in March,I look forward to the first week of March, get the blowaways out ready for the long days of sunshine, putting the plants outside & bringing them inside, having a debate of when are you leaving your tomato plants outside overnight etc. Leeks will be sowed on the windowsill in a deep plastic container from the supermarket that contains doughnuts,it's about 15cm deep & the lid can be cut off & used as a drip tray underneath (& doughnuts!)
Just chillies, some onions and 2 tomatoes for me - I don't have the room to sow much else and keep them going while it's so cold (in theory) outside. I still have 2 overwintering chillies and 2 surviving Crimson Crush sideshoots.
Onions from seed. I will probably start them on January 1st in my propagator. Then a few weeks later I will start off some chilli peppers. Hungarian Hot Wax, Jalapino and Cayanne and maybe a few more. The tomatoes will be started on February 1st. I will also start my Sweetpeas as early as possible. I started them off in the Autumn last year and they flowered really early and kept going through the whole season. I actually meant to do that this year but the time got away on me.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
I will be sowing some leeks, onions, a small number of tomatoes and will try some sweet peppers, if I wait the season will be too short to get a harvest from them.
Of course come January this could all change
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.
