I'm having a second try at Ground Cherries and their cousin the Cape Gooseberry. This time I used some expanding compost disks, I think the multipurpose compost I tried a couple of months ago was too dense for the wee seedlings to push out of.

I thought this batch were doomed to fail as well, as I sowed them over two weeks ago, and kept them close to 25 Celsius day and night, but today I saw a sign of life from a seed on the Ground Cherry side of the container:

There it is, on the top right. I'm quite excited at trying these, and they'll have a heated mini greenhouse to get going in from next month.

My tomatoes started to germinate yesterday. Only sowed them just over a week ago and they weren't even in the prop. Good job i checked them and got them onto the windowsill as they were just on top of my wardrobe.

Run out of the 9 cell tray's which I adore for this purpose! On line in the morning!

Only 3 varieties left to do,

And hoping once moved on , the tomatoes take place, as sowed them far too early last year trying to gain a little advantage!

5 varieties of pepper sown, 2 of each.
6 varieties of tomato, and a pot of parsnip started to see how many get going before I try another batch in case - need about 20 to 25.

The rest can wait until the end of the month - Summer Broccoli, Celery and (maybe) leeks are next.
Think the rest I can start outside straight in the ground.
                      Well that is the plan.

Varieties are not quite 100% what I wanted as a seed seller will not let me have some as the order came to less then £5:99, even though I was paying £1:96 postage immaterial of the quanity. Selected 2 varieties, to get told I could not have them as the seed total was below £5:99, so picked a somewhat unwanted 3 pack. Same message as it now came to £5:96. Why? It is less work for them to put 2 packs in an envelope and the cost is the same to me on postage. I gave up then.

I'd give up too, Kirk. Very odd response. On occasions, I order just a single packet. If I'm paying the postage, what skin off their nose is it how much the order comes to? Anyway, hope everything grows well for you.

OK, I have not sown anything yet but.........................wait for it................................wait for it..............................I put my Charlotte seed tatties in an egg box so they can sprout away.

It was tough doing such manual labour at my age but................so it begins!

Hi Looking at sowing some toms and chillies this week. Both will be grown outside, any suggestion a varieties that stand a good chance of producing?

                            Thanks!

You don't say where you are, so it is not easy to advise on things like sowing times, but if you are in the UK it is very early for tomatoes. I sow my outdoor tomatoes in April. I don't know about chillies but I think they have to be sown early.

Sowed chervil and some silene (flowers) today.

I'm in Essex - I have space to sow indoors and then move out to small growhouse with 4 shelves to protect from frosts
