  • More pallet destruction this morning, and moved some cabbage seedlings out of the polytunnel to harden off.

    • Cleaned the wheelies - filled the small raised bed - washed the window sills outside (thank you birdies for your little presents) and cleared off the top of the tumble dryer that lives in the shed so I can, at some point, start some seeds off.

The weekend plan is too move various bits of teeny greenhouse out of the living room and start construction as Carl is coming on Thursady to level off where Gladys (the greenhouse) is going.

            • Today was wet but good for pulling out weeds. My peas, garlic, onions & flowering bulbs are coming along nice, crocus & snowdrops flowering,my nemesia hasn't stopped flowering it's survived those frosts but it is next to the house & sheltered, some broad beans look alright but I think something's eating them so they'll all look rubbish soon I've just started harvesting my broccoli,it doesn't taste of much so I won't cook it like that again (boiled in water with no seasoning at all). Sprinkled some sulphur of potash around my flowering & fruiting shrubs/trees & covered it over so my cat doesn't stand on it.

              • raining all day - so pricked out my parsley seedlings in the kitchen and dropped the tray - fortunately not the plug tray just the soaking the compost tray - but compost and water everywhere - then the cat walked in it and jumped onto the dining room table!! What a mess -

                • Had a proper session at the plot today, first for months! Uncovered and weeded, manured and dug over a huge patch where the potatoes were last year - managed to dig out a whole bucket of bindweed. Dug out the old parsnips and broccoli stalks. Started to dig this bit over with the digging hoe, but my elbow started complaining! Also must have barrowed half a dozen lots of bark chippings that Ive spread over the raspberry and rhubard bed. No idea if this was the right thing to do or not, but it looks neat and tidy.

                        • I, at least have good intentions - ordered topsoil and compost to be delivered on Monday to finish filling the teeny raised beds.

Base for greenhouse being done on Saturday (Thank You Carl) and the rest of construction will be done by Wednesday (Thank You Carls Dad, Doug).

                          • Two days off work and stone me its not
                            raining
                            snowing
                            windy
and Mrs Balders is letting me 'play' rather than give me a list of jobs... happens once a decade this

So - hour and a half at the plot - weeding and tidying up (might have been a bit of chit chat too)
GH cleared of rubbish - new staging put into proper place - seed trays filled with compost to warm up - two tray s of sweet peas planted, one tray of mixed lettuce and one module tray planted with beetroot
Might tinker with the chillis under the grow lights later - though possibly that will be a step too far for SWMBO !

1574 gin and tonics please Monica, large ones.

                              5 barrow loads!
Still loads to do, but if this weather continues we'll have cracked most of the flower and hebatious borders by Sunday evening!
                              ...then the veg plots ...

I even painted 4 old bird boxes I snaffled from a neighbour en route to the tip!

                              • I started my first proper work on my allotment today.

Tackled tetanus corner (lots of old bits of wire and mesh etc), albiet by throwing it all on to an empty bed.
Pulled as much of the couch grass as I could out of my secret surprise bed along the back of the plot.
Discovered a rhubarb crown by the compost bins.
Started to dig over the back bed, riddling out as much of the couch grass roots as I could.

I was joined by two helpers so I set them to work weeding one of the beds that was entirely covered in green, before borrowing their car to shift my stuff from the old container to my new plot.
