  • Heavy frost at the plot this morning, even in the polytunnel! Thankfully the double glazed coldframe had kept all my tiny seedlings safe.
Sowed some beetroot in modules in the coldframe.
Too cold to stay down there, so on the way to work I went and picked up a compost bin that I got free on Gumtree yesterday.
    He-Pep!

    • I rescued my small pop up green house which had blown over in last night's wind. Thankfully the washing line held it up some way. Frustratingly I had stuff in it. The Parsley and Shallots have gone. but the Rocket and Lettuce that had germinated looks ok! will inspect better tonight after work.

      Where did spring go!

      • Managed to mow the back lawn, front still needs doing. Grass growing like crazy at the moment.
        Another happy Nutter...

        • Filled my new carrot bed with homemade compost and 2 bags of mpc. Also filled the big pot my giant pumpkin will be living in with well rotted farm yard manure.

          • Finally got my hands on some window sill propagators, so after sifting some rather lumpy compost (jacks magic its not!), I sowed some dwarf french beans, some peas, some latah and aurora tomatoes, as well as some various flower seeds from aldi. Will have to check on the seeds over the allotment, but dont think they will take.
Planning on borrowing some loo roll from work tomorrow, its thin 2ply stuff which is perfect for homemade seed tapes.

            • A little more compost shuffling.
              a bit of seed sowing.
cutting back, tidying & weeded the herb bed.
Potted up my Christmas hyacinth bulbs in a big pot with a smaller bottomless pot sunk in the middle ready for one of my sunflowers.
              Entertained the puppy.

              • Glorious day here and I can't get to the allotment (well not easily or quickly!) - M6 is closed and all traffic on A34. I have to use the A34 to leave my suburb ... it has ground almost to a halt. Never mind, potted on lots of cukes and toms. Planted some more cukes and toms and PSB and courgettes. Hopefully Sunday afternoon at the plot to plant first early potatoes? I have grand-daughter tomorrow afternoon and night so we will mow lawns and potter about playing with her wheelbarrow She likes planting seeds too.

                      • Last of the spuds put in under weed membrane - Coleen, a variety I'd not come across before that has 'blight resisitant' emblazoned across its packaging... we shall see - believe it was brought over from Eire by the Nolan sisters in the 70's.

Planted out some self-seeded lavender on the plot boundaries - I envision a lovely waft of scent as I push past with a wheelbarrow full of rotten pallets / decomposing weed material / empty beer cans on a wet May evening...

                        • Trimmed the swathes of grass growing around my plot, which will get added to the leaf bag to help them rot down more quickly. In theory.

Shifted slabs from Peter's plot to mine for the new shed base (exciting times!) and had a half-hearted attempt at digging out the couch-infested bed where my dahlias are going to go.

HSL members' experiments seeds arrived: blooms for bees (seeing if bees prefer certain colours when it comes to lunch) and tomatillos. Shame I'd already sown the variety I want to grow.

Made up a load of seed packs to donate to a local Seed and Plant Swap event I'm helping to run tomorrow.
