  • Someone left charlotte spuds on the donation bench so potted 6 up in MFB's with a mix of soil, compost and BFB.
    He who dares wins etc.

Mrs Balders is away looking after her mum this week and kids back to school tomorrow and I've got 2 days off and the weather looks good - YAY! Its a funktastic perfect storm - though I've got no cash left for fripperies in the garden
    Still...

    • I have had an amazingly busy weekend, now I'm shattered and aching, but so very satisfied.

We had four very large trees which were cut down on thursday and friday and with those out of the way we've been able to entirely strip the nasty overgrown shrubs out of the garden. Many many many branches shredding, and one possibly broken hand for me and we're finally done. We still need to dig out all the root balls, dig over the beds and fertilise but it feels like we're over a massive hurdle.

Today I've transplanted 6 mints into their final home, 3 raspberry ruby beautys into MFBs and all my toms have been potted on. I've also got the next batch of seeds sown. I also rescued my blowaway from the in laws ready for action!

Still lots to do to get on top of things but very happy with progress so far

      • You'd think it would would be easy to get time down at the plot with a four day weekend, but no. Determined to make the most of today, however, I was up early and
        • ran a charity cross country with the running club then came home for a bath to get the mud off
        • got out and joined two purring mogs on the bed and promptly fell asleep forgetting to do boring stretches
        • minced to the Hill with a tight calf and hamstring and went for kill or cure digging of the 'misc' bed - it's pretty much ready for courgettes & pumpkin. Note to self: sow courgettes and pumpkin seed
        • in a change from tackling the 'wildlife area' at the back of the plot, I got the fork out and went over (about a third of) front border which is getting taken over by couch grass. In order to try to solve the problem once and for all, I also dug up the tulips and last year's dianthus. I will replant when the job is finished
        • Dug a few potatoes for tea, and a couple of leeks then pulled a few pounds of rhubarb - the nice thin red stalks for mum (at the back of the pic), the chunkier sticks will make the first batch of this year's rhubarb wine

        • Made use of parents by getting mum to look after children while dad, Oh and I got the frame up for my half polycarb gh/ half blowaway up. When youngest was asleep turned compost heaps & OH and I moved a railway pallet on top of the bank to make a den for children.

Must water everything tomorrow and sow some more seeds. Plus weed, finish gh and put up two new arches.....
          Another happy Nutter...

          • Two weeks ago I was supposed to be on holiday from work but STILL got called in Last week I was working full-time (with a few split shifts thrown in for good measure) and looking after a friend's dog whilst she was away. Hence falling miles behind with my plot!!!!

Today was my first full day off in weeks so I left my phone at home and popped up to the plot to make a start on knocking it into shape. Burnt a few more bits of unsalvagable wood pieces, took up the piece of black plastic which was covering the top corner of the bed next to the shed (result! Weeds all died down!). Moved a few small flowering shrubs from top area to along the bottom fence and then had to call it a day as Neil managed to break both my spade AND fork in the space of ten minutes whilst trying to lever out some half-buried corrugated iron next to the original compost heaps

I've ordered some new tools on my Argos card which will be delivered tomorrow morning. He will not be allowed to borrow these ones!!! I'm on late shift for the next three days (7pm start) so at least I should get a few things done this week.

            • Mowed front and back. Second coat of fence paint on shed (and fence). Dug out two more bucketfuls from the pond site and planted a couple of spuds in aforementioned buckets. Discovered a rat in one compost bin so flooded both bins. Will turn them tomorrow - I'm not that brave....
Before venturing to the plot I patched some plaster in the kitchen ceiling and slapped some cement into a couple of the potholes on the driveway - needs replacing really but $$$$.

On the plot weeded and watered - I'm hoping it rains Thurs/Fri when I'm working - then reverts to sunny for the weekend
              Frankly, I'm knackered

Thats the problem with having a plot next to the main gate, everyone wants a chat as they arrive or leave.

                        • Watered the as yet ungerminated rows of parsnips, beetroot and carrots. I don't remember ever having to water outside in April before!
Also watered some stuff in the polytunnel and coldframe.
Pulled up some weeds to kill time before going to work.
