What I did today - 2017

Not much time at the plot this morning but planted out a tomato in the polytunnel bed, and a courgette outside in a large barrel. Also chopped down the comfrey which was shading some spuds. I'll turn that into tea the next time i'm there.

Not done a great deal, popped to the plot and "pottered" around, took a few weeds out at leisure, looked at what was growing and checked on it all.. had a look around some of the other plots.. but PLANS, I thought up some plans whilst there.. got a list of things to get tomorrow as its payday..
Roundup - to spray the new plot and a few bits at home
Radish seeds
Lettuce seeds
Kale
all the above to fill the gaps
need some fertilizer so getting some compost tea on the go with added nano, some tomorite for the erm tomatoes and some pepper feed with nano for the chillies
My Giant marrows are almost ready to plant out so I am excited for those, will make final prep to the bed this week for those.
Also going to get some greenhouse fixings and price up some polycarb for repairs to missing glass.
I also put the chillies outside for some natural sun and warmth as too warm in conservatory for them this week and hoping the gentle breeze will thicken them up (Pics in chilli thread)

I finished digging that row I mentioned yesterday (and yesterday I mentioned that I finished it in an update to my post) and ran the Mantis over it. (Mantis is acting up so I'll need to sort that out.)

And then the rain began ... again! It will take a day or two to dry out enough so I can plant it. Then I want to dig a row across the east end of my garden for sunflowers. That will take care of the west, north, and east edges. I'll have to dig the rest and keep on planting. Then I'm planning to expand the bed toward the south a few feet.

Erected my brassica cage and planted out kale, sprouts and PSB, planted 4 courgettes one to each recycling box then two in the beds.

Didn't do much today and it took me ages.

Cut and coiled 48 lengths of twine for the bean frames at home in the shade before I went to the plot.

At the plot strung the bean frames and 0lanted out 96 climbing French beans.

Watered the plots , watered the greenhouse, watered myself.

Gave another plot holder a guided tour of the plot. Once the beans have grown up they're going to be able to see less of the plots with a legume wall in the way.

Managed to get rid of a bamboo plant to another plot holder- I've more than I need. He never did say why he popped round, may be to cadge a bamboo plant

Another early shift on the plot on a glorious morning. I just wish it would rain again soon...

Finished covering the 'no dig' (i.e. I ran out of time and can't dig it, but will be blowed if I leave it weedy and out of control all season) bed 7 with cardboard, manure and black plastic. Planted out a Jack O'Lantern, Rouge Vif d'Etamps and Musquee de Provence. Said the names out loud to myself and the sparrows while I did, just because they sound delicious.

Planted a Romanescu, Striato di Napoli and tiger something marrow around the compost dalek which shall henceforth be known as the ant factory. They're doing a lovely job of creating a fine tilth in there, but they're so busy I don't like to intrude...

Planted another Romansecu, Striato and Marrow in front of the climbing bean tunnel, next to a Tromboncino planted out previously. Donated a lonely left over marrow plant on the communal bench. It had disappeared half an hour later, so mission accomplished there!

Sowed some golden mangetout seeds. Sundry weeding and watering, picked some leaves for lunch.

Left with a regretful sigh.

This morning while it was a bit cooler I planted out chard, spinach and beetroot that have been grown in newspaper pots.

I mentioned the other day that I was having a problem with my Mantis. I think/hope I've fixed it today. Since I'm digging my garden by hand it's nice to go back over it with the Mantis to break up the clumps of dirt. If it is truly fixed it will be a very valuable tool to have available again.

After work I need to put up the perimeter netting to keep the silly chickens out.

It has been cool and damp so I don't think I've lost a lot of time by not having everything planted. It was 47*F this morning when I checked. It's turned into a nice, warm, sunny day though.

Finished stringing the unglazed greenhouses, planted out 3 trombone squash and 3 Jack o lanterns and clipped them to the twine.

Planted out half a dozen Yacon.

Planted out 4 Red Currant tomatoes and a Vilma tomato. Built a couple of tomato cages out of the left over stock fence and put up a couple of clip together cages for them.

Planted out half dozen Yacon.

Planted put 3 turks Turban, 2 Uchiki Kuri, 1 Waltham Butternut. 1 Romantic courgette and 1 coucouzella courgette.

Planted out 4 more Yacon.

Planted out half a dozen lavender plants - of course the place where I'm planting them used to be the path which has compacted gravel with an accumulation of soil but once. I got through the gravel and dug it over it should help the drainage for the lavender.

I've ran out of Yacon.

I think that the rest of the plot holders have gotten used to some of my strange ideas now. So I put these up to keep them on their toes.



Sowed coriander, sweet basil, rainbow chard, Italian basil (not sure if there's a difference), lettuce, rocket and spinach.

As long as you don't alternate your red mossy net with white mossy net you should be ok!

Today was exciting, I earthed up the spuds, came up with an ingenious plan to put carrots in the low parts between the rows of spuds, I allowed space originally for this and I will be able to take baby carrots at spud time and also keep the carrot fly at bay because there is a 12" high wall either side of them.. or thats the plan.. I can only try eh!?

Also put two rows of raddish in and a row of beetroot and also put my beans in around my wig wam, and put my Giant marrows out too and put a raised horse shoe of soil around the back of them to keep the wind off them until further established.. its been a great day for me at the plot today
