Yesterday I cleared out the overwintered broad beans & some peas that both had a bit of brown spot, got some peas from them they did well planting in October. Dug out all the weeds & planted some Brussels sprouts & calendula, bit of BFB feed & a bit of last years tomato/potato compost to smother the soil to try & stop any more weeds. Went out with a torch a few hours later to collect the slugs & snails, there was a huge slug about 15 cm long right near the sprouts!

Weeded - the rain was very welcome, but it really made weeding necessary! Watered the glass shed, tidied the jungly tomatoes (3 days of benevolent neglect and they go wild). Picked some broad beans, my first courgette and a handful of strawberries. Planted out some more beetroot and sowed some turnips. Furtled under the spuds - no, not ready yet - another fortnight I reckon Rambling today and lawn mowing at home. Enjoy your Sunday.

I managed to do some of the stuff I planned.
Emptied out a bag of Pentland Javelin spuds - first bag of the year - 2lbs so I'm happy with that.
Cut down the edges of the long new bed and added the ends. Just need to sort out the soil and plant it out.
Got distracted by the black currants which have been attempting to catapult their fruit across the plot every time I walked past. I picked most of them. 4lbs of ripe fruit off 3 bushes. Left a load on as they weren't quite right.
Then I got distracted by the strawberries. 4.5lbs of strawberries later (weight at measuring, not at harvest ) I was smiling with red fingers. So far when I go to the plot there's always a number of strawberries along the front that have been pecked by the birds. Last Thursday I put in some decoys - pebbles painted red glued to sticks. There were signs that these had been pecked but the peck damage on the strawberries was down to 2 fruits. May just be coincidence but I'll keep on with the stones to see what happens.
Lifted the oerprie and quite pleased with the size of the bulbs.
Got distracted by the broad beans. I had 1 plant which grew from my original sowing of Suttons Dwarf and this was covered in pds ready to harvest. It also happened to be in the middle of the resowing which was Bunyards Exhibition. 1lb of pods from the lone plant, not bad - enough to make some humus.
As I was right next to them the peas distracted me next. Up came the Feltham Firsts and the last of the pods came off. 3lbs from them.
Lifted the garlic which was naff.
Sowed some buckwheat into some gaps in the New Territories. The soil in all those beds needs some improvement so I've ordered more to bung in whenever there's space. Didn't sow it into the bed I'd just took the alliums out of as I need to hoe and rake it first but there's a couple of toilets in the way.
So that was most of what I had planned done - need some more buckwheat to finish off the empty bed. On the way out I picked a couple of carrots. Fantastic carrots. Best carrots I've ever grown. No fly larvae and I didn't have them netted. Normally my carrots never get more than an inch long before they give up the ghost and put out the accommodation available signal to the carrot fly.

Built another 4x14 raised bed.
Filled that bed and the bed I finished yesterday with soil and a bit of muck.
Weeded the Yacon bed - hard to see the weeds for the Yacon, squash, Kale and scorzonera but the ones I found came out easy.
Sowed some buckwheat in one and started to sow autumn harvest broad beans in the other - that'll give me alot more beans this year onto of these square foot of dwarf French, 24 foot of supports for climbing French beans, 16 foot of supports for climbing runners, 12 square foot of dwarf runners and 12 square foot of broadies I have growing . I'll finish sowing the rest of the bed tomorrow. As well as an excessive amount of beans I'll be getting alot of organic matter to add to the bed and the roots should be able to great down into the soil below and break it up a little.
Doesn't seem to be as long a list as yesterday.

Im just about managing to keep on top of stuff, life has really got in the way!
At the minute all I seem to do at the plot is weed continuously and pick raspberries. Im on my fifth icecream tub (a big one!) of raspberries, the freezer is crammed full of them. My broadbeans are useless, and infected with chocolate spot so they will have to come up when I get ten minutes. Some of my onions are ginormous, they really need to come up now too. I have some drying in the shed, I'll have to check on them this weekend, as I literally pulled them and dumped them in a box!
The greenhouse tomatoes are ok, its just so hot in there, even with all the windows and doors open. I pulled a couple of toms off that were showing signs of blossom end rot, I'll just have to be more consistent with watering. I found a couple of plants growing under the potting bench, obviously I dropped some seeds in the sandy bit. They looked pretty good so i potted them up.

had a very productive day, tidied the paths around both beds and then spent around two hours weeding and managed to get out every visible weed! I meticulously went between each row and pulled them all and now im totally weed free (until tomorrow) but it was very therapuetic as I went to the plot in a mood and came home a relaxed man lol
also went back later and sploshed a lot of watering cans around the place and gave everything a good soak and used some of my compost tea, my giant marrows are flying along now and probably around 3ft long on the main vine so wont be long till they fill the beds, a personal bed will be on the cards if I manage to set one as its my first time (LOL) but will be fun for me and the kids

Cold and wet this morning, but I went to the plot anyway, just to dump some waste in the compost bin. My two pathetic pumpkin plants were shivering so I cloched them... never had to cloche plants against cold and wet in July before. The other squashes I planted have just sat there and gone yellow, don't know what's wrong with them but I didn't get any squashes last year either, it's a bit depressing. My aubergines that were looking great have started their inevitable decline before even setting fruit as well. It's all looking a bit dreary down the plot. Weirdly, the sweetcorn is doing great, the cobs are swelling up nicely - sometimes there just doesn't seem to be any logic to this gardening malarky.
Put up another wigwam for my Blue Lake beans - the Trail of Tears I put in weeks ago seem reluctant to get going.He-Pep!

Planted out the Blue Lake beans under their wigwam last night. The slimes have had a pop at them, but they're still there this morning.
As all my veg is in (bar a few late sowings), I'm going to start working on the 'project' stuff again - structures, paths, landscaping etc. Started on the central 'blueberry rock garden' this morning.He-Pep!

This morning as there wasn't much time and it was wet, I just did a wee tour of the plot, checking on things' progress and pulling out the odd weed here and there. On the whole I'm pleased with where it's at, considering the mess it was in when I took the other half on at the start of last year.He-Pep!
