  • Did a little test dig on one of our potatoes and pulled out a whopper, which we shared for lunch
Then started to dig over another patch of our plot in readiness for overwintering cabbages, previously uncultivated for some years, but muchimproved by 6 months light deprivation. Discovered an ants nest so will have to go back and finish on a day I'm wearing full length trousers and long socks

    • Finally got the vast majority of my replacement squashes in the ground - had got rather huge! 13 spaghetti squash, 4 queensland blue squash and 6 summer crookneck in and surrounded by slug bait. Only 5 burpees golden courgette to go in tomorrow......

      • Monday's feed day, so gave all the chillies, toms and aubergines a feed.
Rearranged the blowaway as it was getting crowded in there. Moved a couple of the sick-looking aubergines out and put them in the cold frame where they'll get more morning sun, maybe they'll perk up. That left a bit more space for the chillies, a couple of my Padrons are now 4' tall! Did a bit of supporting and tying in while I was at it.

        • Did some very overdue weeding. Moved the achocha fat babies as they were sulking a bit and getting attacked by my slimy nemesis.

Peeled back cardboard to find no weeds at all planted out pot bound Huauzontle and some of VC's perennial kale. Yesterday got last of the courgettes in the ground - fingers crossed.....

              • Had a result yesterday, got given a 6x4 glass greenhouse for free! Just need to disassemble it and take it to the allotment. As Ive already got a base down for another 6x4 greenhouse that cost me a fiver, the glass one can go on that, and I'll sell the other one.

Allotment tomatoes are a disaster, looks like they have blossom end rot. Some plants are ok, so OH may still get him homemade chutney and tomato sauce this year.

                • I keep forgetting to post on this in the evening! Yesterday I planted up 18 PSB plants under netting to keep the butterflies away.

                        • Had to wait in for some parcels to be delivered so I only went down to water the greenhouse.

                          Mulched a bed of yacon.
Pinched out the runner beans at the top of their frame.
Pinched out the Climbing French Beans at the top of their supports.
Pinched out the sideshoots to the pumpkins.
                          Harvested Cucumbers
                          Harvested radish
                          Harvested raspberries
                          Harvested Gooseberries
Tied up the squash to their frame
                          Pinched off a grape vine
                          Filled up a compost bin
                          Partially filled another compost bin.

Oh yes, I also filled the water butt up to water the greenhouse.

                          • Yesterday I harvested 6 cucumbers (!!) two courgettes, some potatoes and some runner beans. Interestingly the beans were from a root of a bean from last year - I did not dig it up as someone on here posted a while ago about beans being perennials and growing across the ground in their native habitat (Central/South America?). Anyway - it has scrambled all over the spuds and has been very productive! Might leave some roots in the ground around a wigwam/obelisk for next year to see what happens

Incidentally I made fridge pickles with the cucumbers - sitting quietly in the fridge waiting to be given away/eaten!

                            • The last of the Romanesque is about to be harvested, quite a success but it does bolt to flower rather quickly, possibly as a result of being grown too close together. Hope to get a tomato that isn't a tumbling tom today.

                              • Sorted out the spuds I lifted on Saturday, and made 5kg mash for the freezer with the ones which weren't fit for storing :-)
