      • Re the coffee grounds, I remembered reading this article by James Wong - controversial! - but I'm not much of a fan of his anyway, and I'll continue to throw sackfulls of the stuff into my compost and leafmould bins....

        • Oh! what a dum dum I am, went to water the toms sprouting in a small bowl on the windowsill, with my home made fine watering can,(milk bottle with pin holes in the lid) and promptly took the lid off and splattered them all over the window....aaaaaaaaHH!
Now I have a new threat, went round my nephews last night for some pancakes, and after the usual greetings of hugs and kisses, found out that they have measels!!! oh joy.

          • What I did today...

I joined this excellent forum, this is my first post. I've been getting some helpful tips as this is my first year of properly gardening on my own, having moved out and got married.

Over the last week I have brought a trug. as my soil is a joke (living in a new build) purchased lining and compost to fill. I have updated the amazon wish list with lots of gardening things fro my birthday this month

The weekend consists of filling said trug, starting some seeds in the greenhouse, and hatching a plan and thinking big for the spring/ summer ahead

            Cant wait to get started

            • Well after several months yesterday I've finally had a day off work that I didn't sleep through. I know I should avoid four letter words.

Popped down the plot and picked Kale, sprouts, swedes, leeks. Dug up some garlic and replanted it. Started the sort out of the green house. Pruned back the raspberries, grapes, kiwifruit etc. Emptied 2 buckets of bokashi into te compost - boy that doesn't half clear the sinus

Back home I checked on something purple hairy and knobbly

              • Went to Aldi and Lidl for some of their gardening goodies. Couldnt get the gloves I like from aldi, so ended up with some cath kidstonesque ones from lidl. Came home and washed about 50 pots and seed trays in various sizes, then popped over the plot to enjoy the sunshine.

Continued digging out the compost heap. It would be lovely stuff if the previous owner hadnt buried god knows how much plastic & wire crap in it! Barrowed three loads down the other end of the plot to try and fill up the hole. It was nice to get out in the sunshine, there was finally a bit of warmth in it.

                      • Over the last two days we have set about my new plot with over 50 man hours put in by the various different helpers.

                        Jobs done included:
                        • raising the shed a few inches at the front to remove the lean
                        • Refelted most of the shed roof
                        • Tidied the inside of the shed and skipped all the inherited bits I didn't need
                        • Put up 2/3 of the guttering for a water butt
                        • Dug out and removed all roots from the surprise bed
                        • Dug up and washed all the plants I needed to move from the raised beds (limiting the chance of moving mare's tail with them)
                        • Planted out my raspberries in their new bed
                        • Cleared wood chippings and created new beds for my rhubarb, blueberries, lingonberries and cranberries
                        • Lifted and divided the rhubarb I found by the compost bins and transplanted to new site.
                        • Dug out the old blackcurrant bush as it was completely infested with big bud
                        • Found a surprise gooseberry plant and mvoed to new home
                        • Removed the old tangle of raspberry supports from the fruit border
                        • Realised that the couch grass hadn't penetrated the weed membrane so rolled and removed almost all of the paths
                        • Planted my strawberries in to the wrong bed
                        • Removed all my netting, posts, slabs and frames from the old beds
                        • Planted my herbs in to pots
                        • Weeded 2 beds
                        • Bought hanging baskets for my trailing brambles
                        • 3 full car trips to the tip (back seats down in a volvo estate!)
                        • Drank quite a bit of tea
                        • Realised that actually all the bed surrounds are rotted and needed removed so I might as well just rotivate and set up my own bed layout
                        • Got a bag of potatoes, a bag of carrots, a swede, 2 beetroots and an onion out of the empty beds

                        • Planted hyacinths from bowls into the flower bed, pruned some wayward snaps, harvested some leeks, chopped back and weeded alpine strawberries, got a raised bed ready for new strawbs as mine have all disappeared, cleared some debris into green bin, weeded patio pots and mourned the stayput that has precious few panes in situ and a leaking roof

                          • Bed 6 the first of the onion beds is now dug over and the stones extracted, washed and placed under the paving stones to the left of the shed, Bed 8 & 10 are now covered with the damp proof membrane and hopefully that will kill the couch grass that had started to grow through the tarp on Bed 10.
