    • I've finally finished harvesting and cutting down chillies!

      • Planted out some garlic and overwintering shallots, plus sowed a few broad beans. It's maybe a bit late for the beans, but we're still hitting double digits C most days this week, and, well, I wanted to try and get something growing over winter

I *think* I have the basic bed layout decided now, but I've not quite decided what I want to grow next year yet. Too many decisions!

        • It was cold and breezy today so Mrs B and I got stuck in and turned over the 12'x6' compost bay which certainly warmed us up. Heavy work and I ache now but I feel really good about it.

            • The hardware store had a really good sale on very large pots so I bought one and repotted my poor frangipani tree which has been living in a 42 litre flexitub.

Also bought some sugar cane mulch for mulching the raised beds later today.

Raised beds are now mulched, along with the "garden bed" (a big slope near my fence which I filled in with dirt) where I've planted zucchini.

              • Yesterday I did the lunch hour run to the plot again (3 miles each way on a bike!) as the weather was dry. Pulled up the carpet of frosted nasturtiums and composted them. Also added some shredded cardboard and coffee grounds to two other compost bins. The worms have stopped congregating under the lids of the compost bins, must be the drop in temperatures overnight, or perhaps the bins aren't 'active' any more?

                • I did some - gasp! - tidying, bunged strawberry plants into hanging baskets to overwinter and planted a lot of mixed lettuce in a mini greenhouse in my shed. Might get a few leaves to sustain the cold winter months!

                  • Gave up on believing that maybe this time my spring onions will grow and put the pots which have been limping along on my windowsill outside in the blowaway. At least it freed up a significant amount of windowsill space for other things.

Mowed and edged back yard. I still need to mow and edge the front and side and I need to spray weed killer around all the edges, but that can wait until the weekend.

Time to put my feet up and watch Netflix for a while.

Planted a couple of Sugar Baby watermelon seeds in pots. The ones I sowed direct seem to have been stolen by some critter.

                    • Pruned my grapevine a little bit, copied what the vineyard have done near me,there's a few leaves on there but it helps it stop getting blown about all over the place. Ive cut the yellowing leaves off my Brussels sprouts. Dead headed the dahlias, nasturtium & marigolds, some frost damage on the dahlias but Ive left it on the plant, that piece of damaged stems protecting other inner flowering stems. Some of my Brussels sprouts look alright which is a surprise if you see the state of the leaves. I cut down my three year old celebration runner beans & one season old white lady runner bean plants & mulched over thickly with their leaves & cut up vines. I wonder if they'll cross,it would give a nice pink & white petal if they do. Last year I sowed a load of peas both sides of where the beans are,I think it helped the runner beans growth because I had the best year for beans last year,so I'll sow meteor peas over there next time I'm out there, taking my parents shopping as soon as they phone me,I don't know how much time Ive got now,I should get ready.

                      • Nothing really exciting, but I finally found an art shop that sold fine paint pens so I could write up my black plant labels and label what we’ve planted in our SFG.

                        • Had the day off work - intention was to spend half the day doing pre-Xmas DIY jobs round the house then get to the plot to finish strawb planter pipe-thing. Trouble is my right ankle had swollen up something rotten and it did smart a little - thought it was due to playing football last weekend but no apparently not.
                          Been tested for gout...

Anti inflammatory pills plus elevated foot seem to be working so hopefully at least a bit of time at the plot tomorrow. Probably no football though

                            • "Bon viveur" is, I think, the phrase you are looking for Kelvin...

I'm neither of course, merely unfortunate... well depending on the blood test results.
