  • What Is Your GYO Downfall?

For whatever reason I don't feed the veg beds as often as I should, maybe it's because they are outdoors & don't need watering as often as indoor growing. I must try harder this year.
Do you have any downfalls that you are considering improving?

Gave up on labelling...we have fairies which pinch the lot!( could be crows or something!)

I REALLY need to get my head around growing rhubarb and mint....I've had no success at all since we've lived here...I've tried loads of locations in the garden too... must research more into them.

Can't seem to grow caulies either- the flowers blow before they are bigger than a golf ball...a location problem again I think.

Basically we need to create ( note the 'we' bit) a bed which is in semi shade but also gets enough rain, cos the beds shaded from the sun at the moment are also sheltered from the rain so get and stay bone dry in the summer.

We also need to concentrate on storing more much more rainwater.

Planning - successional sowing and labelling.

I am always amazed that anything grows with my complete lack of organization.

Growing cabbages in particular but brassicas in general is my big failing. First year, I had absolutely amazing cabbages - huge, dense and really, really sweet. I've been rubbish at them ever since. The problem, I suspect, is that I don't feed them enough. Maybe they need regular doses of well-rotted muck on the surface of the soil. I really should make an effort to learn more. I know all about stamping down the soil and so on, and I do that, but they're still feeble.

Planting out (or not) - I always end up with hunners of plants in pots in the cold frame that are way too small for them because I haven't got the beds ready in time - they either get rootbound and stop growing, or get stressed and flower (last year all my PSB flowered in their 9cm pots!). There's also the major risk of everything getting fried on an unseasonably hot day.

I don't seem to have things ready to plant when the weather is ready, or the space is empty for them to go into, because of late harvesting of previous crop. It usually means small plants get root-bound, if I forget to pot them on

I really don't know what the answer is, as I can't control the weather - I suppose more potting on is needed but then I'll need to buy even more compost

oh my! Soooo many things - mollycoddling things at the beginning, then ignoring them in the end, not picking stuff in time, not watering, not feeding, not weeding, not succession sowing, planting them too close together, running away because there's a bug

I could go on! I think I like the germination part the best, then I go downhill from there...

I am so happy that I am not the only one - I kept my list to a minimum to avoid communial hilarity but Ta Vix as I now feel so much better.

Brassicas - I've never successfully protected them from cabbage white, so the only ones I've grown with any success are turnip greens and psb. I've got a new netted cage this year so am determined to actually use it!

Summer radishes - I've never managed to not have them eaten by slugs.....
                            Another happy Nutter...

I used to blame my neglect on having to go to work, but I was retired last year and it was still a fair way from perfect, I keep going fishing or taking the camera out for walks up in the Glens or on the beach. Too many distractions is my downfall.
