I fitted 2 150mm wide boards either side of the GH at eye level to form two full length shelves. These have 22mm knock-in pipe clips tapped into the front edge, the canes from my pots slide into these and the plants are clipped to the canes with spring clips. No leaning, no sagging and no danger....

I grow all my toms outdoors in beds. I use canes and tie the plants in using bits of fabric from old t-shirts and the like. Nice and soft, a bit of give when the stems start to thicken up, dead cheap.

I'm another fan of bailer twine - stronger & softer than jute (which is great for other things). I normally use canes, but get fed up of them falling over in an evil attempt to poke me in the eye. After using bailer twine for my cucs last year I'll be doing the same with toms if I can did enough places on gh roof to attach it to.

I tie nylon twine around the root ball as I plant them out into the polytunnel border, turn it a couple of times around the plant and affix to the horizontal wires above. Just keep turning the plant around the twine as it grows.

I meant to do that with the cucs but forgot, so wrapped a load of bailer twine round stones & put them on top of the compost in the trough. Worked quite well - was able to adjust twine easily when I needed to.

The tomatoes in the flower buckets get four canes as a pyramid and one vertical in the middle to grow up and be connected to. This year I have bought some tomato clips for the strings in the greenhouses

I'm a string and twist girl, too.
Mine are outdoors and I have a frame built by MrPP that we move from bed to bed each year. The bottom end of the sting goes in the hole when I plant out and as the string is nylon it lasts from year to year.
After years of wobbly canes and strengthening bits of rope, once lashed to the house this is the easiest solution for me.

Once they got to the top of the frame most were just left to flop over the top.

Cadalot, just wondering where did you buy the tomato clips? They look really strong.

Hi Bramble, don't want to steal Cads thunder but there are some here:
                    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Approx-100p...V764SNDYYVDR6X

I think they look really good, the only thing I don't like about winding string around the stems is the damage it can cause, strings and clips could be the way forward for me.

Those are the one I use, Im not sure if there's a UK supplier now (there wasn't when I bought them in 2014) I ordered a Job Lot from ebay and they came from Israel. Still going strong and worth every penny.

Here's the link dylsupplies on eBay

                        Thanks for all the help.
Am going to try both methods. Have been using canes but the person that sells them told me he uses string.

I bought my clips from ebay and they came very quickly from the far east. At the moment I'm using them with 1.5mm dia wire to offer support to my onions see http://cadalot-allotment.blogspot.co...ure-leafs.html

I use canes in the GH each one is fastened at the top to a horizontal bar I couldn't get on with string, then my toms are fixed to the canes with Velcro tie strips I bought from the pound store.
