Kitchen trug

I have one of these, the v shaped wood rather than plastic bucket. It will be up against a fence so will only get sun on 3 sides. What should i plant to make the best use of it?

Is it on the north or south side of the fence? Makes a big difference.

What sort of things do you like to eat? The trug is much deeper in the middle than at the edges, so if you want to grow larger plants or deep rooting ones these will need to go in the middle, with the more shallow rooting ones at the back and front.

If i put larger in the middle those behind won't get any sun. The back of the trug is faces east as i look it at. If that makes sense. The fence runs n to s and the trug is on the w side.

It depends what you want to grow. For example carrots need deep soil to root in but are not that tall.

If I understand this right, the sun rises in the east, on the far side of the fence and the trug will be in the shade of the fence until the sun comes round to the south. Any "big plants" in the middle of the trug may shade the plants at the back but the fence would be more of a problem.

Can you move it elsewhere - even if its at right angles to the fence?

That is correct vc. Not really, it is the only side of the garden that gets much sun.

If it was mine I'd put brassicas at the back (cabbage, kohlrabi, turnips for example), carrots and beetroot in the middle and lettuces and radishes at the front. I'd cover the whole thing with insect mesh - I believe you can get a purpose made cover for some of these trugs, or you could make your own if you are good at DIY. Depending on how big it is, I'd be sticking a couple of buckets of potatoes underneath it too

There are some things that are better in the shade as it helps stop the little beggars from bolting - spinach, chinese cabbage (most orientals come to think of it) etc.

When you have a plan or pics of what you have growing I would be very interested to see what you have done.
