Piccolo tomatoes

I like these supermarket toms - in fact I grew them from saved supermarket seed many years ago - I just can't remember how they turned out.

Seems there is a slight suspicion that they might not (any longer) be heirloom, instead are now somesort of F1

Anyone had any recent experience with them? - there are two sitting in the kitchen giving me the eye

Would seem that they are F1 but you can 'de-hybridize' and end up with one variety which is pretty useless and one that is like piccolo, just not quite so tasty - guess that one gets the "heritage-seed piccolo moniker"

I was thinking of doing this actually, I love piccolo toms! Found a supplier of seeds yet?

I think I'll give this a spin - plant the F1 seeds from the supermarket toms and hope that I get at least some of the more decent de-hybridized offspring.
Then save those seeds for the future, trying to select the best from them (bearing in mind my somewhat chaotic nature this may be a little wishful)

A little "Off Cuff" n off tangent I know!

I know everyone say's Supermarket bought tomatoes are far inferior to "Home Grown" and couldn't agree more!

But of late have purchased a variety called "Angelle" from my local "Morribogs" originate from "Morrocco" and are quite sweet tasting tomatoes to be honest!

You think it might be worth saving seed n give em a bash?

Maybe but in general the toms that come from Israel / Middle East / North Africa are gonna need HEAT
If you've got that then give it a bash...

I grew picollo last year and got a great crop from them. Also loved the flavour. I grew them from a supermarket tomato as well. l saved the seeds from tomatoes I bought in Spain when on holiday.

If we are talking about temps in winter (tomatoes bought 'lately') I don't think their winter temperatures are that much better than our summer ones, especially if you grow under cover.

I grew some Piccolo tomatoes from a Sainsbury's tomato in 2015. They were easily the best tasting tomato I've ever had. They had a different colour to the original tomato and slightly thicker skin, so they didn't run true. My regret was not keeping any of the seeds.

I grew them again, last year, this time with seed from a very tasty Aldi Piccolo. Their appearance and skin turned out to be the same, unfortunately the taste wasn't, being very poor. So, based on my experience, I'd concur that they are F1.

I'm having another go this year; fingers crossed.

Why didn't I save those 2015 seeds....?

I had no luck wiht germination this year - unless they are amongst the 10's of labelless tom's I need to decide whether to cull or grow on.... (cats knocking things over, me being useless with labels etc)

Piccolo tomatoes

I saved 120 Piccolo tomato seeds from supermarket tomatoes & planted them all. I have to say every one came up. Some a little more spindly than others but a good tomato plant stock all the same. I am currently waiting to see what kind of yield these will return.

I saved Piccolo seeds a couple of years back. They grew well but produced orange cherry tomatoes with very thick skins. Very tasty but not the same as the parent.

This year I've bought some Piccolo seeds, I'm hopeful that this will produce toms like the ones in the supermarket.

I grew them once and they were ok...I got the seeds in a swap. Second year they were rubbish.
I don’t mind chancing one or two plants but there lots of heritage seeds out there that are delicious or indeed spending a couple of quid on an F1 pack is really worth considering. With all the time and effort put into growing you want to start with a good chance of eating something that tastes nice.
