Sparrow,
in my first year I did grow chard and never eat it and went to flower , only like them as baby leaves ...so its again a trial to harvest baby leaves as I hate to throw seeds. and sevaral plots away , with different structure and trees in between ... gamble or pull them of and compost are two options for me. so I gamble and will be self-seeders for later years. repeat it with many other varieties of beetroot, so I can stop sowing them ever.
though weather is not that great in here, we have some space (yeah there were many vacant plots )
all I need to find is ways to make it self maintainable.
when you are trying to save 100% genetic purity, I know the difficulty. but it should be possible too.
