  • Asparagus Pea

I've just asked Sparrow for asparagus peas on the VSP and after reading lots of Internet comments (including a couple of old threads on here) I'm now wondering if I've made a mistake!

What do you lot think - should I ask for something different?

        I love them!
The secret is to pick them no more than 3cm long as they get tough and stringy.
You'll find you don't get many on a daily basis, so pop them in the fridge and eat 2or3 batches at a time.
I tend to steam mine at the same time as other veg.
        More of a taster crop.
Daily picking...or every other day...is the key
Lovely served with lemon juice or butter...
        Pretty flowers too!

I posted a similar query to yours last year after disappointing results. They got a thumbs down.

Saw some in Ham House's period veg garden last year. They were very pretty. Maybe they could go in the flower garden and any crop treated as a bonus.

I think you just need to try them...and then you know. I was going to suggest planing them in tubs in your garden so they are easy to keep an eye on for cropping.

I grew them a few years back and won't be having ago again.

I found them to be slimey, even when picked very small. They, at least to me were similar in feel to Okra.

How about having a go at them and then deciding if your taste buds like them because at least then you will know.

I'm not sure I'm convinced by the sound of them - low productivity, has to be picked every day, and if it has a mouth - feel like okra (slimy) that's a big no - no for me. Then again, it's new to me, & apart from postage they won't cost anything.......

Will have another look at the VSP & see if anything else grabs me.......

                Thanks for all your replies

If you soak okra in vinegar before cooking it'll cut the slime factor.

If you throw the asparagus peas straight down the loo you'll eliminate the middle man and taste-bud disturbance.

Though Nicos likes 'em so you *might* HH - go on, give 'em a go and report back !!!
