I plant directly into the border, again similar to Bren, I uproot my toms plus a few more shovelfuls and refresh with homemade composts. When I plant up I cover the top of the soil with newspapers as a mulch. Stops weeds and helps with keeping mousture in. I sink plastic milk bottle in along the row to water into. I often use the bucket method for my cues but Zi find its more time consuming than chucking them all straight in. I wouldn't worry too much about the couch...perhaps you could plant through do e weed membrane?
