Too early for potatoes in pots, in un-heated greenhouse?

They have been chitting a month, im getting desperate to get something done!

Iv got a un-heated greenhouse, big 10 inch pots, in the south east,

Is it too early to just chuck em in?

I've just done a couple of pots, it may work - it may not, but I reckon it's worth trying

You could plunge the pots in the soil to protect them from any frost, then move them later.

Im in Swansea and have just put a few pots in.
I fill to the top and stand on a few inches of cardboard and if the temps drop too low just wrap in bubblewrap.

I always put a really early couple or three rows into the polytunnel in January which obviously is much earlier than reccomended. I started doing it in Feb originally but now get them in pretty much as soon as I can buy them. I only do first earlies like this and they are heavily fleeced. This year they have also had a covering of shredded paper for extra insulation.


Those are epicure, casablanca and rocket on the 9th Jan.

I've had some losses, last year a few rotted in the ground but that was a drainage issue rather than the cold and with the help of some other plot holders and some funding from the PC a new land drain has hopefully sorted that.

So, not too early in my opinion

I've had first earlies (Lady C) in buckets in my friend's unheated greenhouse and outdoors in a polythene cloche for 2 weeks and I've planted some more buckets today. Because the greenhouse has a few holes in the glass I also put a polythene cloche over the ones in there. The buckets outside are currently wrapped in bubble wrap to give them a bit more insulation if we get a frost. I intend to plant the last few Lady C at home tomorrow, some under another cloche and some in my growhouse.

Last year I did the same in the greenhouse with excellent results, and planted the ones at home in my garage, moving them outside at the start of April, so these are a bit more of an experiment this year.

I think you will be ok ,if you think about it the spuds you miss when harvesting always seem to grow ok without molycodling them don't they !

I started some spuds in buckets in the GH a couple of weeks ago. Today, the shoots were showing so I've earthed them up.

I have just planted half of my Arran pilots into pots and are now in the G/H...rain stoped play . no room for me and the pots..

Remainder of the Lady C planted in pots in the garage as it is too windy to be messing with polythene cloches today!
