  • Onion Sets - Spacing for Planting

Hi there. I was looking for some advice as to what is the minimum spacing I can get away with without compromising the growing for my onion Sets.

The varieties I have are Stuttgarter and Red Baron. I want to maximise the space and get as many in the smallest space I can that's all.

    Kind Regards.........Rob

I used to plant far enough apart that they wouldn't touch when matured, but I've seen many comment that they'll push their way through. I'd go for at least a couple of inches in all direction and make sure that they get plenty of manure/compost under them.

Many thanks. I have planted them now with about 3 inch between them

Imagine the fully grown onion and space accordingly

I think 3" is far too small, mine are at a minimum 6" apart in all directions, with your spacing each onion can only grow 1.5".

How are you going to weed amongst them?

Set suppliers and books often say 4 inches apart but I find at that they don't grow to full size. I usually space at 6 inches.

This may give you some idea. This planter was grown by a now passed friend, it had long been a challenge between us to grow onions touching this was the result, not quite but nearly. I grow red baron the same way but lost the pics when the site played up.

Well, they are in high raised beds so getting to them is easy to weed. I will have to live with it now and hope they all grow to 3" wide onions. I will be happy if that's the case. Regards.......Rob

That's brilliant Pots, makes me wonder where I go wrong, maybe I should try closer together again especially now I'm mulching everything.

I'm trying to cut down on the weeding required so I have made weed membrane sheets for my 2.4m x 1.2m beds with 105 planting holes at 150mm centres in both directions.

I don't plant them closer that the width of my small hoe.
