  • Manure Tea - Storage

Hello there. I have a question about Manure Tea.

What is the best vessel for storing it in?

I thought maybe Milk cartons or plastic cordial type drink bottles.

Will they explode? Do they produce gas if stored in plastic bottles? Obviously I would rather they didn't!

    Kind Regards...........Rob

I use milk cartons and cleaned screen wash containers for wee, comfrey and nettle tea. The latter too I'm told don't store well long term but I can't throw it out so save it for spring and make more. Haven't done manure tea.

To be honest, having drunk it once the idea of storing it never crossed my mind .

@ESB, screenwash ?, you not heard of water and washing up liquid ?

I use plastic milk containers for the stuff I pull out of the plastic bin the weeds are steeping in. I probably ought to empty that - it's going to happen when I turn the compost heaps

I thought that the idea of Manure Tea is that it is full of active microbes and needed to be used fresh before these died off. With Comfrey and nettle teas it's the nutrients that have leached into the liquor so they can be stored as the nutrients should be there after storage but with manure tea won't the microbes die?

I used comfrey and seaweed teas that I had kept from last year, but will not be keeping it from one year to the next again, I see Jay-ell thinks it should be ok keeping them but I just wasn't happy with the results I got from the teas I kept, no hard facts just the impression things were not as they should have been
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Thanks Rary. Like Jayell, maybe we need a microbiologist to do a research paper on the subject. The way I see it is it must be better than plain water anyway.

Because food is always better with a bit of poopy water sprayed on it?

I don't make manure or compost tea but I do make comfrey concentrate which generally gets used up as I make it. I do store the last bottle and anything left in the tubs for the next spring. I store the nice dark liquid in a certain make of cola bottle with the red labels still intact and store them on the shelf by the door in the unlocked shed where they are safe from being mistaken for anything else by people who know what they are.

I’ve just found a bucket with a sealed lid on and suddenly remembered that inside is some weed tea that I left steeping in about August last year. I haven’t opened it yet as it will truly pong but do you reckon I can still use it?

                      Kind Regards.............Rob

Well I did use it a couple of weeks ago. Poured it diluted 50/50 with water onto my bananas and various other plants.

                        Kind Regards.............Rob

I would like to add that they also gave a little fizz when opened. Definitely cant be mistaken for something else.

At least not by anyone with functioning sense of smell.
