Sowing seed early SFG

Hi, I've recently built myself 3 raised beds in which to start growing some veg using the SFG method. I've grown stuff from seed before starting them off on windowsills etc, but I'm wondering if it would make sense to get some sheets of Perspex or similar to put on top of the raised beds to be able to direct sow and get better succession planting.

Has anyone any experience of doing this, and what crops was it most effective with?

Ive direct sowed some carrots in a pot & put a clear bag over it with a few holes,to keep the moisture in,but remove it after germination. Having perspex protection from the wind,would the plant stems grow to be more tender,plants might just need hardening up a bit before removing the cover completely. It would be like a cold frame,it might get too warm inside for brassicas & too cold for direct sowing tomatoes. I've never tried it,sounds good!

Not quite the same but this was what I did with my early peas last year:



The white at the back is fleece, which was there to stop the peas from growing away from the fence too much. Photo taken 1st March.

I've also grows spinach in a saladgrow planter (2ft square) with a plastic lid over it. I strongly advise taking the plastic off as soon as the seedlings have germinated, particularly if they are in the sun - mine got scorched and a lot of the seedlings died when I tried to leave the plastic on for protection, even with the ventilators open.
