  • What to plant now ?

I have just dug up my red onions - some are keepers, some are not, but the weather wasn't treating them well....
its left me with a decent size space. What can I put in now that would either give me something fresh to munch on in a few months, or be a starter for over wintering ?
Are there any varieties of carrots that would grow quickly enough for pulling in late Sept / Oct ?

ps - I have a small plastic greenhouse multi-grow type thing if that would help

There are several things you could try which, depending on the weather, should give you some produce before or during the winter.

Yes, you will get carrots if you sow now, but maybe not huge roots. Try some amsterdam forcing for quick growing, mid-size roots.

Beetroot should be OK, too. I'll sow my last batch in mid-August.

Leaf beet or swiss chard will not only produce in the Autumn but keep going into the winter - it can be very useful.

It's not too late to sow spring cabbages, either. Something like Pixie, Duncan or Advantage would do the job.

Lettuce, of course, would be good - some quick growers for autumn and some slower ones to stand into the winter - you can use your cloche for these!

And now for something completely different............
You could still plant Florence Fennel. Just make sure you net it. I planted out my first batch the other day - lost the whole lot in one night to the feathered rats. Next batch should be ready to plant out by next week though.
Chinese Cabbage and Pak Choi can both be sown now - very quick to grow to maturity.
      Hope this helps too

        Hi Gingernail,

You could sow some kale, PSB, Collards ( I sown mine some 3 weeks ago ) you could over winter them, and you could try some of the mustard ( japanese red mustard ) it should be ready at the coming fall. I have just sown some mizuna, mibuna, tat soi... pak soy ( the brassicas group, they grow fast and should be ready for the fall ) and some spanish black radish ( it said to be winter hardy with some protection ).
        Good luck and happy sowing,
