What's in your bucket (MFB)?

Oh yes, I forgot about the two tayberries as well. Really need to make a second fruit patch soon

so, to summarise, this means in buckets I have

1. 2 Tayberries
2. Bluecrop blueberry
3. Pink Lemonade Blueberry
4. A golden currant
5. goji berry
6. Goose Berry
7. Black Berry
8. 2 black currants
9. Elephant Garlic
10. 4 Soapwort
11. 2 large buckets with Jerusalem Artichokes (plus a bath full)

Add to this the toms and peppers etc that will be going in them later on in the year and it looks like I might be doing a bit of container gardening until I sort out where everything is going to go.

I'm actually toying with the idea of paving 50% of my plot and putting most everything in MFBs
Now't in the rules to say I can't...
I've got spuds and onions - will be toms and cukes a bit further on...

What's in MY Buckets

I havent done it yet but plan on putting Cucumbers and Tomatoes in mine.

Over the weekend, I put drainageholes in the sides with a soldering iron.

Thanks to this thread I trotted down to Morrison's this morning and picked up 20 large buckets and 4 small buckets for 99p. I think the lady in the gardening section was eager to see them go after Mother's Day!!

I have been putting holes in them using a cook's blowtorch and a meat skewer. So far so good apart from welding two together accidently, I was too eager to get started to notice I had not separated them!

Around 50 Carrots have 1" seedlings in 2 buckets so have sown another 2 buckets today.

And to add to this I've done

• One bucket of Red Sun Shallots (20 shallots in the bucket)
• One bucket of Golden Gourmet Shallots (26 in this one)
• One bucket of 10 Elephant Leeks (I may do more buckets later - I've enough little leeks to do about 30 buckets - just not enough buckets )

Sage ,French tarragon,thyme ,spearmint,chocolate mint,spicy oregano,basil mint ,chives,garlic chives & a bay tree at the moment,soon will have my chillies and tomatoes in them .I tend to keep my herbs in these outside the back door as it means we actually use them.

Well here's my thinking behind it.

If a big shallot splits into several shallots which have to share the resources of the mother plants you get several smaller shallots. If a little shallot only splits into a couple then they get more of a share each so grow bigger.

If you limit the space and resources the seed shallots get, e,g, packing loads into a container, then the shallots they split into will only be able to grow small.

Come autumn/next spring when they are planted into the real bed these little sets will only split into a couple of new shallots so next year I should get larger shallots, but less of them.

As I said - that's my thinking behind it. I've already planted a similar amount last autumn in a square foot. They're a little ragged on the leaf tips but the rest of the plants are healthy and seem to be going to split OK..

One of the other plot holders asked me what I was doing. When I told him he thought for a while and said "I'll work all the other stuff you've done has" (how little does he know)

I will be giving them feeds of comfrey tea to keep their health up.
