  • Buy Coldframe or not buy cold frame?

Not sure if this is the place to put this or not but if not admin please move

Soo I am in a bit of a debate, I have the chance to buy a cold frame, (of which I already have one but it's glass and I can't lift the lid on it as it's just a sheet of plastic), and I was wondering what people thought of this one? Its normally £149.99 but it's 50% off so I would get it for £74.99, Do other's think it's worth it or not?

Hi. I made two very similar to that from decking board, 2 by 1 and poly tunnel plastic for the lid. A cheaper option.

Your local hardware store should sell thin translucent correx for a few quid, builders use it to protect work surfaces

It looks like a much better quality one than I have but also vastly more expensive as well. I got mine end of season reduced to about £12. Full price it was probably £25-30. You could get or make something a lot cheaper but if money is not an issue it certainly looks nice. Are there any reviews on it, that's what I'd be looking at.

For the price,117cm wide & 60 cm depth isn't very big. Would anyone ever pay £149.00,did you see that TV program that showed shops put the price to £149.00 for a couple of weeks, then they show a reduction like that to try & convince the consumer that they're getting a bargain. I cant imagine anyone ever paid £149.00,you can get a full size shed for that. But it is pretty, but it's easy to get a tin of paint,I'd compare prices & sizes with other places

                Immediate thoughts are:
13.5 inches by 32 inches by 42 inches high is not very big.
3 shelves doesn't give much height if plant pots are included (about a foot between them) - are they removable?
                Wooden shelves block out light.
Polycarbonate is very light. The timber won't be heavy enough to compensate, so if you put it where light can get in all round its probably going to blow over.

I can see the appeal over the more usual blowaways from an appearance point of view, but I'm sceptical that it would do the job tbh. Despite my concerns, it does get a lot of good reviews.

I'd say it's worth £75 if you're concerned about how it looks, and your DIY skills are negligible... it has a couple of nice design features like the adjustable propping thing, and the way they've removed the frame on the bottom edge of the glass to let water run off.

If you have time and enjoy building stuff, you could get a lot more for your £75 though. I made this a few years back:

Thanks Penellype, in hindsight I can see what you mean. Back to the drawing board. Yes I am looking for something a bit more aesthetically pleasing and more robust that the usual blowaways!
