  • Chilli's - Transplanting Seedlings

Hi There everyone. I have two Chilli's which I think are ready for potting on. The seedlings are about 3-4 inch tall. Should I pot them on now. If so, how deep? Right upto their leaves like you would for Tomatoes?

    Kind Regards.......Rob

Rob you should repot them when the white roots are just showing out of the bottom of the pot and to the same depth as they already are, unless you have roots showing at the junction of the stem and the soil then add just enough to cover them over. You should not IMO repot them then upto the first leaves like Tomatoes as the stems tend to be much woodier are are less likely to send additional roots out like Toms do, you may even damage the plant growth by doing that.

Personally I plant mine down to the true leaves (as I do with most veg).
      Never had a problem.
Feed the soil, not the plants.
      (helps if you have cluckies)

Not a good idea to bury the stem of the pepper plant. They dont throw out roots like tomatoes.
        Like Muddy Boots said.

Tomatoes can form new roots anywhere up the stem. Chillies and peppers can only do so up to the level of the seed leaves.
I agree with planting deeper, but only up to the level of just below seed leaves. Any deeper and you're risking the stems rotting.

Their pretty leggy , youll need a pretty deep pot to get them in shape but its worth a go, as others have said, bury up to the first set of leaves.
                What variety are they ?

Looking again they may well be past the point with it being so early in the season but you never know.

In that case Rob if you have more seed id sow again, plenty of time for them i think.

I would plant deep about 1-2 cm below seed leaf - Then sow a few more - Padron do not need such a long season as they tend to be eaten green.
