The good, the bad and the ugly.......names of fruit and Veg !

A thread on the fruit forum earlier made me think how much I like a good name when i'm choosing varieties.......yes i also look for attractive attributes in the particular variety or possibly some heritage value but at least part of my decision making process (subliminal perhaps) is down to the name. The reality for me is that if it has an awful name its probably not going in my piece of dirt.

The Terrible
Sarpo Mira (Potato) Sounds like Klingon
Sarpo Axona (Potato) ditto - although possibly worse
Discovery (Apple) just utterly naff
Scrumptious (Apple) named by the local kindergarden - yuck
Gala (Apple) Bingo

I'm also looking forward to eating 'fat babies ' this summer. I take great delight in saying 'Huauzontle ' as well as eating it. I also just like the name 'uchiki kiri ' for a squash.

It was listed in a catalogue of a specialist scion wood provider, amealias apples if I recall correctly. I don't know anything else about it.

Strawberry honeoye always makes me cringe. I do have some as they are the nicest tasting early strawberries I have found, but I loathe the name and would have bought them much sooner with a better one.
