Interesting... I’ve never seen sweetcorn produce side shoots like that. I thought you meant the smaller cobs that form on the main stem. Your plants look great, more advanced than mine!

Thanks Bario1, but think they have been saved by the heatwave (relative word) here at present. Without that planting out on the 06/05/18 would not have looked too pretty, they looked rough for a week before this heat arrived. Next year will sow again around 03/03/18 but when pot up seedlings will be into bigger pots than this year and keep in greenhouse till later in may. They all had side shoots, so odd they were different to yours. Outcome of reading is leave side shoots but remove any sign of a cob on them, similar to this sites excellent growing guide that have just found

The side shoots have been growing back so have left them to it
First silk today, so have shaken the tassles a bit to help pollination, presume thats sensible

Getting alot of silks, even one on the side shots, slightly concerned will end up with lots of poor cobs rather than a few decent ones

Result here were the Earlibird did/doing well. Have had 2 cobs off them vs only 1 cob of the Northern Extra, so Earlibird it is again next year

Another Earlibird convert then? Got some nice fat cobs on mine now, looking forward to eating them, maybe this weekend.

I’ve converted to Real Seeds’ Special Swiss

Being OP not a hybrid, I can save seed, and it’s done well for 3 years for me now: the May sowings are nearly ready

Voglen, I didn't grow Northern for a second year so cant add more. Last year had Earlibird and Swift and found Swift slightly better yielding.

Grew Swift F1 last year. Only ever grown Swift F1.

Sown in greenhouse in modules 14 March. Planted out in April. Covered in fleece for a few nights and harvested towards end of August.

Blanched in steamer for 2-3 minutes, cooled in ice-water, dried and frozen. (A process mrs quanglewangle declared to be "too much faff" )

I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

Another advocate of Swift here. Grown for a couple of years now with some success. Embarrassingly I didn't get to harvest the later cobs due to other commitments but I got at least one, and sometimes two edible cobs per plant.
Swift again for me this year.

'Incredible' for me this year, 50 seeds to the packet so up to 100 cobs harvested. Grew 2 years ago and still a few cobs left in freezer. No faff freezing just pick, trim slightly and straight in freezer with a few leaves covering the cobs. 25minutes in oven to cook straight from freezer.
