Are early sowing's worth it?

I sowed these on Jan 1st, as an experiment to see how far ahead I could get.

The tomato plant is 2.5 feet high, and has its first truss,

The cucumber plant is over 4 feet high, and has multiple cucumbers on it.

Im going to see how everything else catches up now, and keep you guys updated.

We've had a few of those in this part of the SE as well. That's why my plants are all coming indoors at night unless the forecast is above 10C

Nice healthy looking plant.

I like to try a few early sowings but I'm aware I could lose them if the weather turns cold. This spring has been unusually warm and everything is well forward, but the risk of frost hasn't gone yet.

My January sown Shirley tomatoes have golf-ball sized fruit on them and have been stopped at 3 trusses, but they are staying in the house so heat is not a problem. Charlotte potatoes planted in a hotbed in February are a foot high, and are covered with fleece at night - this is a real gamble as a proper frost could easily kill them. If they don't get frosted though I'm hoping I may get new potatoes early-mid May.

I wish I could, but I don't have space for them indoors. One plant that size takes the space of 6-8 of my tiddlers on the windowsill. And I only have one sunny windowsill.

0.3 degrees here last night. Warmer tonight, but plenty of opportunities for a frost next week.

I only sowed my tomatoes the other day, some just peeping through, they won't be going into the greenhouse before May. We do however get around 20 hours of daylight if the cloud lifts in high summer, so stuff does catch up.

This is one of the reasons I like this forum - hearing from people in other parts of the country with such different growing conditions.
