Germinating melon seed

My Blenheim Orange melon seeds have only just started to germinate after 3 weeks, however I decided a week ago that it was just too warm in my propagator and took them out.
If you have spare seeds left, it won't hurt to pop a few more in perhaps.Blogging at..... www.thecynicalgardener.wordpress.com

Melons actually germinate best at quite high temperatures, between 25 and 30 C. And the night temperature shouldn't drop below about 18 C. So if it's an unheated greenhouse it may not be warm enough, even with the heat pad. Try putting them in a warm place indoors for a while. But then you also need warm conditions day and night for growing them on afterwards, so I'm wondering how you're going to provide that so early in the season, especially in Scotland. I won't be sowing any melons for a while yet.Last edited by Zelenina; 07-04-2017, 07:21 PM.

Does sound slow, according to my records mine germinated in about 10 days last year in an unheated propogator. Not sown yet this year.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I'm growing some (forget which) but I put seed tray in unheated GH during the day and on the night I put on the double radiator with a bit of cloth underneath so when they turn on in the early hours it warms underneath. They have roots now but no green come out, been a few days.412% of statistics are made up.

I usually sow mine in a heated propagator, looking back to last year my melons took around two weeks to germinate.Adventures in growing exciting and unusual edibles! https://modernvegplot.com/

Yes it's possible that you got a dud batch of seeds, pepper. Did you dig any up to examine them? You could buy some fresh ones to sow as insurance in case they never come up. Maybe a cheap ordinary variety, just so you can test if your conditions are right.

Seem to recall someone saying that they soaked the seeds in water for 24 to 48 hours until the seed opened, they they sowed them into or onto the top of a compost in a propogator. Think they to be kept in a moist environment in order for them to get going. No idea why.
Not sure how long the seed is viable for, likely depends on how they are kept.

Never had much bother getting them to sprout. My problems start when they have been transplanted in to the pots. They seam to take it in turn to die off. Sowed a whole packet of "sugar baby" ? expecting most to die off and now have about 40 plants that all look healthy.
In my case sowing them and forgetting about them works best for me.
