Bastard potato - or a volunteer?

Hmm - apparently left over spuds in the ground might be called 'bastards' in this part of the world.
Seems a bit harsh - volunteer sounds a little nicer IMHO.

What are your local words for left behind spuds that then sprout the following year?
If you have any other possibly dual meaning or misinterpreted words feel free to add them to this thread!

I've always used "volunteer" but that's because I've read it in gardening books, when I've mentioned it at the plot some have understood and some haven't- there doesn't seem to be a word that's local to here. Were in the Midlands and we're always polite here, not surprised that your B@5tards down in Devon

Its from a colleague of Mrs Balders - Devon born and bred but a little rough round the edges so might just be a general term for vegetables...

I've always known them as rogue spuds.

"volunteer" the first year and the other term the second or third year they appear if you are on a three or four year plot rotation, especially when they come up in the middle of something precious.

I was born and bred in South Devon and always known them as volunteers as thats what the family calls them.
