I have built a raised vegetable bed and would like to know what is best to fill it with, do I make my own mixture or buy a bulk bag that is already a mixed topsoil/compost? The raised bed is 1.2m x 1.8m x 0.4m

I just double dug mine then added a load of old grow bags from last year.
Plus some chicken pellets.
Out of interest which way is South on your picture.

Definitely needs some way for water to escape as its on a solid base.
If it were mine I would make a lasagne bed. Find as many as you can of the following:
cardboard
shredded paper
old woollen or cotton clothes (but NOT synthetic fabrics)
horse manure, preferably rotted
nettles
grass cuttings
used coffee grounds (free from most coffee shops)
used gro-bags
comfrey leaves
home made compost
leaf mould
You don't need all of these, but the idea is to create alternating green and brown layers, which will be mixed together by worms as it rots down. Put the compost or used gro-bags on the top and plant into it. There is a video with details of how to do this here:

You are looking East in the picture, so it runs East to West. I have been doing a lot of work on the garden this year and the wife wanted a Veg Garden so i but this when i did the patio at the bottom of the gardenComment

It has Drainage, the veg patch is straight on the ground. The flags are just around it, it sits inside it.Comment

That's a good idea, simply fork over the soil that's already in the bottom & top up with any organic matter you can source. Well rotted Horse Manure is by far the best & cheapest.............there's nowt cheaper than free......Originally posted by Mightyjoe View Post

What are you going to put in it, it's not very big?

The best mix was the one that I used that recommended for square foot gardening
1/3 Peat
1/3 compost
1/3 vermiculite
Result was a light fluffy mix that held just the right amount of waterComment
