  • IT makes little difference how many holes - it's still drainage.

What gardening did you manage today?
Have you got any photos of your progress?

    • I prefer several - Mrs Balders just likes one big one... having said that she doesn't garden???

      • no photos as such but i have managed to have 3 foot by 1 foot space which I think can grow 10 carrots, the rest in containers, if the carrots do grow I will clear more space. I just lack the time and inclination at the moment to do more , plus I am debating if the are gets enough sun

        • If you don't mind me saying so - or even if you do - I don't think your heart is in this gardening lark. If you "lack the time and inclination.........to do more" in my opinion we may as well stop answering your questions. We all have gardens of our own to attend to and making time to answer questions like "Do you use pots with one drainage hole or do you prefer several" is pointless if you're not interested in the replies!
Others may disagree with me, but I really have better things on which to spend my time.

Thers little point in asking loads of questions if you can't be bothered to do an more at the moment. You can't debate whether anything gets any sun - the proof s in the pudding. Dig it over, plant in it and record your results.

            • Are you really serious about gardening Tarragon? Forgive me but 3 x 1 ????? Thats about 3 turns of the fork!

As said before preparation is key, you keep asking how things grow but have not yet prepared the ground.

3ft x 1ft = 36x12= 432 sq inch............given a generous spacing of 2" between plants, you should be able to grow at least 50 Carrots in that bed............Square foot gardening states 16 Carrots per sqft so that gives you 48.

You'll get a lot more than ten carrots in that size space! Personally I'd be looking at around 30. However until you clear the space, you wont be growing anything! You dont need to remove every single stone, only the big ones (maybe new potato size and larger?).
I know it's daunting, but you only have to do little and often. Dig the bluebells out, mix a little bit of multi purpose compost in with your soil, and just plant stuff. Dont worry about the sun, or potting mixes, just start simple. All the rest can come later.

                    • Like the others I question your seriousness. You ask a hundred questions but pay little heed to the responses. You ask advice on crops and then ignore the advice given and say that you are going to plant the most inappropriate crop for the ground.

You spend all your time asking the same question or totally irrelevant questions and have done nothing on preparing the ground.

Had you either focused yourself on prep and planting with half the effort you have on posting repetitive threads you would have that strip fully planted.

                          • Jay-ell you must of missed the posts where i said I have cleared this space and got rid of 2.5 wheel barrows of stones. The fact i am asking questions now is that i am ordering a majority of my gardening stuff next week along with seeds etc.

So i thought it would be propitious to ask , I want to plant carrots because I like them , I find spuds a bit boring but thats just me , The other herbs , veg I am growing are things I cant get in supermarkets. Potatoes are 10 a penny but a purple carrot is something a bit different.

Thanks for all your help up to this point , but I would hate for you to think i am just sitting here not doing anything.

10 days ago I knew nothing about gardening but in 10 day I have read , asked and retained a huge amount of information which is required if i want to try to be successful.

Hopefully this is the start of my new hobby

I have read I need to space out 3-4 inches
