  • Depends what sort of carrot your growing - some need more space some need less. In my head I've got it in inches I think it varies between 2 to 4 inches - also depends on your soil.
Thing is with gardening its not an exact science - its a mixture of art and science - much like life in general - I tend to play it like its all art... sorry about that.
You should ask all these questions, then see what happens when you try X Y or Z. Next year you will have a better idea about what happens in your specific plot.
    Good luck.

Yes that's correct so if you have a 1ft square that will give you 16 Carrots with 3" spacings...........4 x 4's

or 12 Carrots with 4" spacings.

      • Thanks for your reply ,

I heard actually that crocs doesnt aid in drainage, are you staying there is no need for small stones at all , what happens if the soil falls through the drainage holes ?

My Korean mother in law , uses egg shells to prevent slugs and snails , have you heard of a similar practice in England. As most of my pots dont have feet would this be wise. Of course if i need them I will get them but they are quite expensive considering the number I need ?

Is a compost and 25 percent grit mix a good mix for drainage for herbs? Asking this as I never got confirmation on this but just remarks from bigmally , although monty dong swears by the stuff ?

Is the carrot sweet and short good ?

        • Crushed egg shells do not deter slugs. Crocs in the bottom of pots do aid drainage.

The only pots that have stones in the bottom are my very tall pots, to make them more stable. In fact I think they may even have a mix of stones and the polystyrene cubes that bedding plants come in.

It doesn't fall through except, perhaps when you're filling the pot. Then you sweep it up!

            • Questions for Tarragon!

You've asked lots of questions since joining us and received lot of advice in return.
I've been reading back through your posts and its my turn to ask you questions now!

Did you dig up the bluebells?
              Did you remove the "pebbles"?
Have you planted anything in that space?
Have you sown carrots in the ground?
Have you planted anything in the soil?

I'm sure we'd all like an update on your progress. Maybe other members would like to ask whether you've acted upon their advice too?

Its always nice to have some feedback, just to know that our time has been well spent helping you.

              Thanks
