Any Difficulties This Year?

Lettuce for some reason this year...Can't get it going at all

I'm nervous about the parsnips, so I might try some more....

Biggest failure was sweet peas. Bought spiffy new rootrainers, very excited... got 10% germination. Then baby slugs decided they loved the little holes in the bottom for cosying up in.... and the rest were eaten.

Same here! Jacks Magic; This year the majority of veg potted on is struggling with this brand.

Healthier plants are in two other branded composts.

Not seen any detriment to plant health, but I definitely think the quality of Jack's Magic is worse this year - full of hard bits about the size of chickpeas.

Courgettes I've sown 10 seeds 5 different varieties and up to yet I've got 3 seedlings, so I'm sowing more today.

I've had courgette issues too. I planted a few along with some squash and only one came up. Planted a few more and then only got a couple more, one of which doesn't look like it'll come to anything.

Got really confused about the orientation of the seed in the soil. Read various things that conflicted.

Onions from seed, been in around 10 days and no sign of a single one germinating :O

We moved into our new house in December. Managed a couple of hours digging over a week in January. Planted three rows of shallots in February. It was so cold that I didn't stay out long and the clayish soil did not break down well. I was forced to drag a hoe through the ground to make a row. So I underplanted the shallots with parsnips with no expectation of germination as the packet was over a year old. Anyway I have had brilliant germination of the parsnips and I am so proud to have them. The shallots are doing well so double bonus.

The ground is so hard now that I don't think I will get many seeds direct sown unless it rains like the devil.

No sign of my broadleaf sorrel or daubenton kale. I haven't grown either before so maybe they're slow to germinate but usually I don't have a problem with kale. Could just be that the seed is too old though; no idea

Sweet sultans and Sweet peas have had germination rates of about 10% for me. Everything else seems fine.
