  • Netting

I have placed some insect netting over my leeks and carrots but I now have to weed them. How is the best way of going about this without letting in any insects? Should I uncover the plants bit by bit or is there a particular time when the pests are less likely to be around?

Carrot flies are most active when it's sunny. I try to do thinning and weeding on dull days. Late afternoon is supposed to be a good time for it too.

I don't know the habits of leek moth or allium leaf miner or whatever else attacks leeks. Hopefully someone will be along soon...
