  • Dwarf french beans

I am growing Canadian wonder dwarf french beans.

OH thinks there is something wrong with them as the pods have not fully swelled up. Some of the beans in the pod have bigger beans and the others a small.

I think they take time to swell up.

    Who is right?

What colour are the pods, have they turned yellow yet?
    What colour are the beans?

I've no idea - mine are only just germinating, but I'm interested to know the answer for when mine get a bit bigger :-)

According to the blurb on my packet you can start harvesting when the pods yellow and the beans are pink - once podded if you leave the beans they will redden up.

Still have to sow mine though so you're a lot further on than me.

Doesn't this depend on whether you want to eat the beans green, in their pods or whether you want to leave them to dry out for winter use?
If eating green, it doesn't matter what size or colour the bean inside is, its whether the pod is young and tender! To me, if you can see the beans inside the pod, they're past their best

I was going from the angle that Canadian Wonder is marketed as a Kidney Bean so the red beans would be the desired harvest.

Bean seeds inside the pod do take a while to fill out and form fully, it's still early especially for a dry bean type. It's possible that if temperatures have been low, although the pods will form the actual seed part is not properly fertilised and won't grow, giving a partial set of seeds in the pod.
