I have learnt with these seeds that damp compost, not wet is the way to go. I dampen the compost with a spray, just enough so if I squeeze it it holds together. I dont water again until I see growth.

I have had no shows with various spring onion, baby leek, chard, beetroot, curly kale, spinnach and am wondering if seeds that have gone past their date are indeed not worth planting. Some are past, some are not but I have had success with outdated seeds in the past.

You could put a few seeds from each packet on some kitchen roll indoors to see if any can germinate,remember to label them Then you'll know which ones to throw away & which seeds are good.

I sowed three cucumber seeds in three pots two came up in one pot none in the other two, so transplanted one to the other pot. And resowed about 8 seeds in the remaining pot. The day after one popped up in that pot.

Have you changed the way/place you store your seeds Marb?

I've kept good records, and I've noticed that courgette sowings in late April seem to have much higher germination rates than those sown in early April. And this has been true for various seed packs, across several seasons.

I've only got a basic heated propagator, so it's possible the ambient temperatures have contributed to greater heat for germination. Or maybe the seeds somehow 'know' it's too early and don't break out of dormancy from the early sowings.

Well still no show, and some are brand new seeds this year. Checked a couple of them and not rotted.

sorry to be smug but I planted all my courgettes pumpkins and squash seeds 4 days ago ,about 40 in all,as some will be given away, and today.....every one is up

Nor me marb.
3had rotted and one was just sat sitting there looking bloated.
Fortunately for me it was the green courgette which failed ( new seed) and not the yellow which are hard to find .

I have bought a packet of the French equivalent of the trombone type courgette as a replacement so I'll be sowing them in the next couple of days.
