First broad beans

Picked the first few pods for supper last evening. They were a bit small but boy were they tasty. I didn't know that they grew so tall. I pinched the tops out at 5' 6". We have to do a lot of eating or freezing because my runners will be going in after the broads have finished.

And there was me thinking I'm doing all right for once with broad beans. Mine are about 18 inches tall, lots of flowers, first pods just forming, ants all over them but am just about keeping on top of the blackfly.

My first pods are about 2" so I've just pinched out the tips like someone once said,to help against black fly,I didn't see any black fly but I have got some leaves that look distorted,had a look around & found a whitefly

Just one of mine was plastered in blackfly this morning and ants. I am fighting back with a diluted washing up liquid spray and lots of pots of mint.

My broad beans are only about 6 inches tall, and already in tatters courtesy of the pesky pea and bean weevils (which have also discovered the sweet pea plants).

Pinched the tops out a week or so ago and hey presto lots of beans emerging now, some will be ready to harvest next week. Very fortunate with hardly any blackfly or weevil damage to speak of. I am very surprised again this year that more people have not over-wintered broad beans on my allotment, as their spring sown ones are very far behind. Same with peas, I am already harvesting peas and the weevils have not touched those plants, only the younger, spring sown peas and beans.

Except for 1 plant which is in flower, my plants (after 3 sowings) Are now about 1 inch tall.

It's an interesting question, isn't it? I usually overwinter broad beans but they've never come to much till this year, when I sowed them in late winter/early spring instead. I won't bother overwintering again.

Mine are still only about 5 inches tall but starting to get flowers. So many haven't even sprouted yet! Glad it's not just me but I'm longing for the first handful
