  • White fly prevention advice please

Last year was an awful year for white fly, so much so that I was tempted not to grow any brassica this year! Well, I love them too much not to grow so any advice on preventing white fly or how to get rid greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Whitefly is so small that I'm not even sure that enviromesh will keep it out. Debris netting alone, doesn't that's for sure!
Tagetes (French marigolds) do deter them to some extent, so perhaps plant a mix of them and brassicas under fine netting which will keep the Marigold smell inside

I used bugclear for fruit and veg last year and it works but it is pretty much veg oil. You can make your own up by letting garlic soak in oil with other herbs and flowers if you wish then dilute it down with water and spray the plants.

Washing up liquid sprayed from time to time or the more expensive neem oil have some effect but nothing seems fool proof.

When I had whitefly I tried everything. Yellow pads with some sticky stuff, can't remember when they're called. Used bugclear, washing up liquid with a damp cloth, and sprayed with a strong hose. Nothing done any good, when I cleared the plants as bests I could I would check next day and they would all be back.

Honestly it was more damage control than actually getting rid of the buggers.

Have you tried Borage as a companion? It's invasive but it does help

I always plant french marigolds with my veg, especially with my tomatoes, and whether its luck or the marigolds actually do work, I havnt seen white flies in my greenhouse in years. Its worth giving it a try.

And your hands begin to harden.

If you collected some deadheaded marigold heads in a jar & added water to make a marigold tea & sprayed it onto the leaves would it confuse the whitefly to what plant it is,because they don't like to nest near a marigold? It reminds me there's a fly spray that uses marigold extract, all natural ingredients product. I found this link,it shows good results against pests using the English marigold in water & sprayed onto brassicas -
"The extracts were made by pouring 100 ml water over 50 g of ground dried herbs for 24 hours (Wawrzyniak 1996) and filtered by using muslin."

Experiment with varieties, the last two years I found that whitefly absolutely loved my Reflex curly kale, but barely touched the Pentland Brig right next to it. This year I'm not growing Reflex (but maybe I should, as a 'sacrificial' plant?). I'm going to try marigolds amongst the kales as well.
