Do you really need to grow the seeds 5 cm deep?

I usually stick my finger down to the first knuckle and dib them in. The seeds are only small when compared to broad or runner beans so it's just a rule of thumb (pardon the pun) as the bigger the seed is the deeper it needs to be planted.

I usually start them off in a sealed plastic bag with damp compost . When you can see strong shoots through the bag I then plant out
I don't seem to lose as many seeds this way.
