Friday jobs
Start preparations for frost as the next week or so is looking quite cold. Once things in my back garden freeze solid, they stay frozen for ages as they get no sun.
- remove water trays from under saladgrow planters and from cold frame - done one, stuck a couple of tennis balls in the water tray of the other.
- bring all remaining begonias into garage - done
- bring a bucket of carrots into garage - done
- consider digging some leeks and planting into a bucket to move into garage - not done, teh leeks are so ropey they really aren't worth the fuss.
Clear up leaves - done some
Harvest salads, carrots and any strawberries that are turning red (I think there are 2) - done, including one strawberry plus some calabrese and brokali shoots.
Also removed some dead bedding plants.
Weekend jobs
At my friend's:
Cut down dead cucumber plant
Assess sweet potatoes and possibly harvest
Weeding if possible
Harvest parsnip and peppers
At home:
Continue clearing leaves and bedding plants
Assess nets and decide which to remove if snow is forecast
Continue planning for next year

Well last week dug up my sweet potatoes - about 40lb. Not 1 was nibbled by a rat. Last year I tried and they only left me enough for 1 dinner with a few scraps left over - from these I was able to grow 12 slips which were planed out in a polytunnel this spring.
Tomorrow I'll be digging up my oca before any hard frosts. Never tried these before, doubt that the rats have but could be a first for both of us. I'll also be digging up most of my daliahs and chrisanths. The only problem will be the mud, its been rather wet lately.
The other thing I need to do this week is repair an old shed roof - it should have been refelted a couple of years ago but now needs a bit more drastic treatment, I think sheets of plywood on top of old roof with new felt on top of that.

Declutter a Y?? STILL PUZZLED
Tomorrow I shall be sowing cabbages and Brussels sprouts. Normally it would be lettuce and salad leaves too but my random GH sowings have been very (?too) successful and I have 100s of seedlings.
Leaves week is going to include herbs - so I'll be sowing parsley, basil, coriander, chervil and dill every 4 weeks from tomorrow.
Its good to have a plan, even if nobody else understands it
Its also Tidy Bed 27 (unlikely) and throw away something selected at random!!

I've seen a load of branches plonked in a car park so armed with a saw and secateurs and sheer brute force I intend to cut them up into manageable chunks and carry them home in my car where I can shred them for mulch. I'll also get a few bin bags full of leaves. I've found some plastic sheeting so the leaves can go under them on parts of my allotment where I've already dug like this.

How many beds? Its like how long is a piece of string
The middle part of the garden has 30+ that I try to do something with each month. Then there's the garden nearest the house with 5 greenhouses and some flower beds and the far end of the garden which has some veggie beds that are fenced off from the dogs, Then there's the sides of the garden that are awaiting development and the bit behind the chicken run and the rockery and the front garden
Keeps me out of mischief!!

Today I need to check all the seedlings and make some decisions about which ones to hold onto. I don't have space to plant them all out at the moment, or even to pot them on, and quite are few are backups for seeds which were slow to germinate.
I was concerned that my strawberries didn't really seem to be doing much but I noticed a flower on one of them this morning, so it looks like the things which like warmer weather are finally starting to progress after a shaky start.
My remaining Lebanese cucumber is only producing female flowers and I'm not sure whether to pull it out or not. I sowed some more seeds in pots but they haven't germinated yet. I think I may need to buy fresh seed.Last edited by lolie; 27-11-2017, 09:36 PM.

Monday jobs
Remove net from broccoli - done, and also removed the net from the carrot cage as snow is looking rather more likely later in the week (it would probably break the frame)
Continue tidying up - done a bit
Put up another cloche to protect spinach from freezing wind - done
Harvest salads, carrots, check calabrese - done, calabrese not ready yet
Tuesday jobs (likely to be busy with work)
Put things away in garage (nets, water trays etc)
Continue tidying up if possible

Not much to show for a day's "work" but I've been out for much of the day.
Must sow the seeds I meant to sow today,
Tidy Bed 28
Find something else at random to chuck out.
