Thursday jobs
Shred more weeds at allotment - done a bit
Move peas to grow light garden as some are germinating - done some
Move currant and gooseberry bushes to front garden ready to take to allotment - done gooseberry
Bring wheelbarrow home from allotment to transport bushes with (too big to fit in car) - taken gooseberry to allotment
Harvest salads, parsnips - done
Also planted 80 onion sets at the allotment and spread some old compost on the pea bed. Put the remainder of the packet of peas to chit as I have a feeling that germination is not going to be great in the pots I have sown.

Check peas and move any more that have germinated to grow light garden
Plant onions at home
Sow spinach at home, cabbage for allotment, and lettuce and beetroot for my friend's hotbed

Just sat a two day (First Aid) refresher course, so think I am now all up to date, legal and can don my blue Hi-Viz vest from now on with pride!
How sad! All Management, Supervisors, First Aiders have to be distinguished with a "Blue Coat" Honest it sounds like "Butlins" Having said that, the majority of days it is!
Tomorrow is the start of my new season, our lass at work, weather looking good!

Weekend jobs
At my friend's
Plant onions, find fleece and cover - done
Check lettuces in greenhouse and water - done
Harvest beetroot - done
Also finished emptying the old hotbed into buckets for potatoes ready for filling next weekend.
At home
Dig out compost from raised bed that blackcurrant was on and take to allotment for bean bed - done
Bring fresh horse manure home and make above bed into a hotbed to put potato buckets on - done
Sow spinach, lettuce and beetroot - done Also planted chitted peas in pots in the propagator
Harvest salads, leeks, mizuna, carrots - done
Also dug out another of the raised beds to make a 2nd hotbed and filled it with fresh muck - I have a feeling every scrap of heat I can generate will be useful this spring! I would do the other 2 beds but they are full of soil and I don't have anywhere else sensible to store it.
At allotment
Spread compost from home on bean bed - done
Shred some of the hawthorn prunings to get them out of the way (very prickly) - done
Continue pruning hedge to west side - no
Also covered all the beds that have been topped with compost with fleece to stop a cat digging in them.
Monday jobs (looks set to rain all day, so much for a "dry" week!)
Cut some more hedge, weather permitting
otherwise looks like a housework dayLast edited by Penellype; 19-02-2018, 09:00 AM.A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy

Monday jobs
Cut some more hedge, weather permitting- no, too wet
otherwise looks like a housework day - done
The rain kept me at home most of the day, where I could nip out when it stopped and come back in during the heavier bursts.
Decided to put up the 1m x 2m polythene tunnel that I am going to grow lady C potatoes in (eventually) and use it to protect the calabrese, which probably won't like being very cold. The tunnel also covers the leeks in the ground, and will hopefully enable me to harvest them before it freezes solid in there. It will be interesting to see how it copes.
The original plan was to plant the first lot of first early potatoes this weekend. As I now have a hotbed I decided to cover it with one of the blowaways built to half height so that buckets will fit inside. I will plant one bucket of potatoes (Arran Pilot) tomorrow to go in there, on the grounds that if you don't try things you never learn anything.
Given that the current forecast for next Monday night is -7 (can't be relied upon, but looks possible), and there was ice on the bucket of carrots in the garage last time we had -3, I ordered a small electric greenhouse heater. This won't heat the whole garage, but if I put it at the end away from the door and lift the buckets up onto a shelf (cold air sinks) I might manage to keep them frost free and useable. This meant rearranging strawberry plants so that I could bring one of the strong aluminium shelves into the garage, and also meant rearranging the garage to accommodate the shelf.
I now feel a little happier that I am in a better position to cope with "the beast from the east".
Also harvested salads, beetroot and carrots.
Tuesday jobs
Take compost that is currently in bucket 40 (grew tomatoes last year) to allotment for leek bed.
Plant 2 Arran Pilot seed potatoes in bucket 40 using compost that grew kohlrabi, wrap in bubble wrap and put on hotbed
Assess situation at allotment, tidy out shed
Spread compost on leek bed and cover with fleece to keep cat off.
Prune more leylandii if time and not too wet
Harvest salads, swedeA life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy

In the mystery seed parcel I got, there was hanging basket seed discs. So going to have a play with that.
Hopefully fill a bit more of the new bed.
Empty a bit more of the compost bin
As you can see compost bin is in need of a little TLC
This much has come out so far
This much has gone into the new beds
( thought it was a lot, till I saw this photo)
This much still to go
