I'd like to think Sunday I will get there, but I have a feeling there will be a lot of cleaning up of things, stuff and unmentionables....

Check tomato plants for blight - done, see below
Remove dying bedding plants and bolted lettuces - no

The huge Ferline plant near the hotbin was showing a few possible hints of blight yesterday afternoon. As it is "blight resistant" I decided to leave it until today as I was running out of time. This was a mistake as this morning there were definite brown areas on the stems and one of the trusses of fruit was badly affected. I've cut the plant down this morning and picked all the green fruit - these are the undamaged ones:

I'm hoping at least some of them will be edible, but on past experience I fear it is unlikely.

The Sungold don't appear to have blight yet and have nearly finished fruiting.

          Monday jobs:
Chop up and dispose of 2 large trugs full of blighty tomato foliage.
Harvest salads, carrots, courgettes, french beans, cucumber, strawberries

Missed a couple of days here - but yesterday I decluttered the Neighbours

Today is Monday 16th and the first day of Shoots week - when I do things with onions, leeks and things with funny names, like Oriental veggies.
I also need to Tidy bed 16 (which is unlikely as its under the neighbouring old oak tree - and its too windy to play under trees.
Its Q day for cleaning and decluttering which is a bit Questionable - so I'm emptying a filing cabinet and shredding Paper to make up for yesterday's missing P.
Also waiting in for a Parcel which is limiting how far I can go outside the house.

When I noticed the blight on the Ferline tomato plant yesterday morning I inspected the Sungold and they looked ok (they have never looked well, but as far as I could see they hadn't got blight). By 3pm 2 of the 5 plants had the telltale black marks on the stems. It never fails to amaze me how fast blight takes hold of tomatoes. I picked all the green fruit and cut the plants down.

              Tuesday jobs
I've already been out and secured the cane that the runner beans are climbing along as it had broken free of the arch and was swinging about in the wind. The beans need taking out, but I can't get to them until I take out he courgettes and those haven't finished yet. When the gales stop I will need to deal with it properly because there is another storm on the way for the weekend. However nothing is going to happen today as I have meetings etc all day.

              • Due to the fact that the back garden compost let me down badly, I have nothing to do except try and dig up some leeks without them snapping off, so rooted in mire are they... rescued a couple chioggia to see how they'll do in big pots in the utility room which is like a cool greenhouse....

Might kick back and do a bit of research towards next year's raised beds in which I'm trying for

                • onions
                • northern lights leeks
                • chioggia

with a smattering of marigolds/nasturtium which, whenever I look at the latter, the word 'rhododendron' pops into my head. Possibly get insulted by Dr Hessayon via one of his 'expert' books.

Dig out bottom of hotbin (again) to make room for vast amounts of dead/dying plant material - done
Attempt to secure or remove runner beans - removed the horizontal cane so it is at least stable
Remove dead courgette and lettuces and bolted pak choi - done
Tidy up dead leaves - done some
Harvest salads, french beans, carrots, calabrese - done except calabrese

Also went round watering everything as the pots were all very dry after the strong winds.
Ordered some seeds (lettuce, spinach, carrots and broad beans which I have been persuaded to try).

Thursday jobs (work and weather likely to be unhelpful)
                          Weeding and deadheading
                          Continue tidying leaves etc

                            • Today I'm on snail/slug patrol.

It's finally raining here after a brutally dry autumn/winter (we're over 5 inches and 30 days down on our average YTD rainfall) and we're due for about an inch. Most of my seedlings are about ready to be planted out so I don't intend to let the snails/slugs get them at the 11th hour.
