  • Thursday jobs
Weeding and deadheading - too wet

Harvest last bucket of Sarpo Mira potatoes - done before the rain started. 0.95kg in this bucket
Harvest salads, carrots, calabrese - done
Check strawberries - done, ate one

Did some planning for next year (along the lines of if I plant broad beans in a bucket now, am I going to regret it in March?)

    Friday jobs
Waiting for a parcel so somewhat restricted until it arrives (9-5 - why can't they be more specific?)
Catch up with weeding, deadheading and tidying leaves etc
Check all stored tomatoes and freeze any that are getting too ripe
    Continue planning for next year
    Harvest salads, courgettes, calabrese, carrots
    Check french beans, strawberries

    • Today the plan is, turn Humphrey the pumpkin into soup, chutney, roasted seeds, chips ( for tea) and a couple of big chunks in the fridge to be used as and when.

Tomorrow harvesting every single chilli ripe or not and cutting down plants.

      • This weekend I need to bag up or spread last years leaf mould so I can start collecting again in a week or two. I'm going to insert a couple of pallets as a back panel so the wire cage goes bigger, planning ahead there.
Also assemble a raised bed I made from 6x2 timbers, these were bought to make shuttering on my big 20ft shed with planned reuse for the bed. They are all cut to suitable size and my neighbour took down an aluminium conservatory so I grabbed some straight lengths and made stake to secure the boards to. They should outlast me stuck in the ground.
I've got 3 sides of the Big shed creosoted (the dark sides) leaving just the south facing front to be done, I don't expect it to be dry enough this weekend, but if it is thats getting finished.
        Grass cutting and compost turning.

          • Weather permitting I will be preparing two holes

Not just two, any old holes but where my new pear trees will go. The soil where I intend to plant them needs a little tlc. Stoney and full of all manner of detritus! My thinking is if I do the prep work now so the soil will have a chance to settle before I purchase the new barefoot 2 year old trees.

That's plan A, plan B.....should the weather conspire against me I have some cauliflowers to sow and a greenhouse that needs a tidy and plenty of pots and trays that need sterilising.

            • Friday jobs
Catch up with weeding, deadheading and tidying leaves etc - done some
Check all stored tomatoes and freeze any that are getting too ripe - done for now
Continue planning for next year - done some
Harvest salads, courgettes, calabrese, carrots - just salads
Check french beans, strawberries - not ready yet

Also replaced a finished bucket of carrots in the growhouse with the spinach that will spend the winter in there now that it gets little or no direct sun.

              Weekend jobs (weather permitting)
              At my friend's:
Check greenhouse tomatoes, remove any mouldy bits and harvest ripe fruit.
              Check stored melons for ripeness
Assess outdoor tomatoes and remove if dead (were showing signs of blight last time I looked)
              Weeding

              At home:
              Weeding, deadheading and clear leaves
Take down tomato supports and remove roots
              Remove dead bedding plants
Assess front fence and possibly rearrange
Harvest salads, carrots, courgettes, calabrese, peppers
              Check french beans, strawberries
              Continue planning.

The rear hedge needs a trim, but it will be far, far too wet. Possibly some time next week?

              • Today I need to cut some pieces of scrap wood for a makeshift garden bed edge in preparation for having some soil delivered later in the week. I should probably mow the lawn as well and give the compost bin a stir.

As predicted, the weather has been terrible and I've hardly been outside all day.
I have however, decluttered a Very Untidy pile of papers and shredded some for the chicken run.

                  Tomorrow is Sunday the 22nd,
                  That's tidying bed 22,
Cleaning and decluttering a W - ?windowsill, wardrobe??
and sorting out the seeds for next week which is Fruits week. That'll be some peas and beans to sow on Monday.
Hope the weather is better and I can do some outdoor work.

                  • Set up string on veg bed #1 for square foot gardening. Planted two squares with garlic that I had chitted over the past week.

                    Fingers crossed.

Have you settled on a final layout for your beds yet?

Spent most of the time in the greenhouse, cutting down tomatoes and one of the cucumber plants which had died, tidying up and removing moss from the glass.
Harvested a kohlrabi and some carrots

                          At home:

Continue planning - done some, concluded that I need another 10 buckets...

Also made soup using the kohlrabi and carrots from my friend's along with a bolted leek, a couple of courgettes and some tomatoes.

Monday jobs (weather/work combination does not look great) - basically I need to catch up on what I was supposed to do at the weekend:
                          Weeding, deadheading and clear leaves
Take down tomato supports and remove roots

                          Check french beans, strawberries
                          Continue planning.

Not quite but I figured I'd best get garlic going. They're in the last column of bed 1, top and bottom square. I may end up changing what I grow to accommodate where I've planted the garlic.

Too much planning to do and not enough time!
