Ouch, that's too hot for me!

It's too hot for me, too. We've had about a week and a half of high 30s weather and my tomatoes still haven't started to ripen. The relentless heat is just making everything go dormant. Even the zucchini are dropping their flowers because it's too hot for them to pollinate properly.

I had wanted to go and put in a few hours at our local community garden today (they meet every Tuesday), but it's way too hot to be outside.

I'd like to dig up the perennials in the bed under the sitting room window, split them and replant them, as they are getting very crowded (particularly the crocosmia) - done some
Remove geraniums from front fence (dead) - done
          Wash plant pots - no
Harvest carrots, kohlrabi - done, also ate the rest of the beansprouts
Also moved the tomato sideshoot from the growlights upstairs to the sitting room windowsill as it was getting too tall. It has flower buds

Finally the ground in the front garden (which gets some sun) has defrosted and I was able to dig up about 2 sq ft of flower bed and remove as many of the crocosmia bulbs as I could find. This is right up against the front wall of the house and the soil contains large lumps of clay as well as stones and gravel from the drive. It hasn't been dug at all for about 10 years, so it was hard work.

Really nice to do some "proper" gardening for a change! The back garden remains frozen in places even though the temperature here reached 11C today.

          Wednesday jobs (work permitting)
          Continue with the front flowerbed
          Harvest salads, carrots

Continue with the front flowerbed - no, it decided to rain
Harvest salads, carrots - done, plus some small calabrese florets

Decided to go to the garden centre, my excuse being that I needed a new trug for the stables as the handle on the old one is broken. Wilko is cheaper, but further away and in the middle of a busy shopping centre, whereas the garden centre is just down the road. In fact I got a rather dusty one for half price . Otherwise I was very restrained but did get a hanging basket for the new raspberry plant.

No gardening today, although I might find time to sow some salad greens.

Yesterday I sowed some mixed salad leaves.

Continue with front flower bed - done - I've done as much of this as I'm going to for now. The plants have been lifted and all the crocosmia bulbs from underneath them removed, and I've replanted them.

Harvest salads - done, also carrots and a leek

Saturday is catching up day but I'd need a week of Saturdays to do that! Weather permitting I'll do some weeding and move some wood chip to top up a couple of paths.

                        • Tomorrow is work, DONE, then making a selection of cakes, DONE, and washing another batch of pots- I only have two 4’ pallets as drying racks, and there’s no way I am drying all my gravel trays and pots with a tea-towel!- NOT DONE, as previous batch still not dry- but February magazine arrived early so I don’t mind having a quiet hour on the sofa

                            • Added some more garlic to the SFG. About two months after the first lot. Planted onion sets. Will see what happens about March time. If the sets have rotted, I'll replace them.

Tomorrow is Sunday, a day for sorting seeds to sow on Monday, the start of Leaves week. A pinch of mixed salad leaves, that's about it at this time of year.
