  • Today I'm having Christmas lunch with my children. It's going to be 39C, so all I'll be doing when I get back home is watering.

Tomorrow is going to be much cooler, so I'll spend it putting together my new raised bed.

    • Tomorrow being "Christmas Eve" it's like the beckoning of a new year, clean sheet, fresh challenges, and a fresh outlook! Oh! and a few day's off work!

So the propogater will be set up! The lighting rigs twigged, and a few pots, trays and toilet roll holders will be brought into play, cleaned and disinfected!

      Yes!

        • Weekend jobs

          At my friend's
Feed slugs to chickens - done
Water greenhouse lettuces if required - not necessary
Weeding - done, first time I have been able to get at it for 3 weeks. Weeded the whole veg area in about 30 minutes. I love no dig and mulching!
          Harvest parsnip - done

          At home
Weed hosta pots and remove moss - made a start on this
General tidy up - done some
Rearrange plans for next year to include allotment! - made a start
Harvest salads, carrots, kale - done except kale, pulled a leek instead.

          No gardening yesterday.

          Tuesday jobs
Garden is very wet after last night's rain
Continue removing moss from hosta pots (a long and tedious job)
          Continue planning

          • Cooking up 4 different kinds of turkey curry, then meatballs and a vat each of spag bol and chilli with the 6kg of mince I found in the yellow sticker section of the supermarket this morning, and using a variety of leftover veg from entertaining over the weekend.done.
We have loads of freezer space at the moment, so that should fill the space until our harvests get going again-and free up a few evenings for seed planting too

Continue with moss if current covering of slush melts - no chance, slush is now freezing
Continue planning - struggling with this at the moment
                  Harvest salads - done

                  No gardening time tomorrow.

                  • Friday jobs
Garden is a no go area after a frost last night and it is now snowing and not about to stop any time soon.
Pot up a couple of French beans - the compost has been brought indoors to warm up and will be mixed with a bit of fresh horse manure and some finely chopped haylage. The idea here is to test the haylage for aminopyralid because it has been bought in and I don't know where it comes from.
                    Continue planning.
                    Harvest salads.

                      Weekend jobs
The forecast of overnight rain and rising temperatures has proved inaccurate, it was cold enough to freeze the lying slush and then it has snowed again a bit on top of it. Gardening today is not going to be possible, and tomorrow we are forecast heavy rain and gales.

                      At my friend's
                      Check lettuces in greenhouse
                      Weeding if possible

                      At home
Check snow has not damaged anything
Clear ice away from garage door if possible (currently lethal)
                      Continue planning
                      Wash some pots
Harvest salads, carrots (from garage if necessary), turnips if possible

                      • Today - Saturday is catch up day. Realistically not much can be done outdoors as the ground is too wet.
                        GH tidying today, perhaps.

                                At my friend's
Check lettuces in greenhouse - some are going mouldy
Weeding if possible - no, flooded
Used the soft, saturated soil to help harvest a huge parsnip.

                                At home
Check snow has not damaged anything - seems ok
Clear ice away from garage door if possible - done
                                Continue planning - done some
                                Wash some pots - no
Harvest salads, carrots, turnips if possible - done, turnips have started rotting - clearly didn't like being frozen

Sowed some lettuce and peas for pea shoots.

Also walked down to the allotment on Sunday afternoon, hoping to find someone about, but the place was deserted.

No gardening today - family time.
