  • Wednesday jobs
Check heater in garage - done
Check tunnels and cloches and shake off any snow - done
Collect more snow - done, all available storage now full.

    Thursday jobs
Another few inches of snow over night, which is blowing about so difficult to see how much, but some roads in the area are now blocked and it is still snowing so I am going nowhere fast.
1st March so I should be taking garden photos, if I can get out of the house!
Check heater in garage, if I can get in.
Shake snow off cloches and tunnels (wind has done some for me)
    Check allotment if possible

1st March so I should be taking garden photos, if I can get out of the house! - done
Check heater in garage, if I can get in - done (min -0.1C again)
Shake snow off cloches and tunnels - not required, wind removed the snow
Check allotment if possible - done

Also retrieved my snow shovel from the allotment and cleared the path to the garage so I can get in.

Friday jobs (snow is definitely melting but still a very cold wind)
Will probably avoid walking to allotment today as the pavements and road look lethal.
Sort out plans for what is going where - minor adjustments required
      Start some alfalfa sprouts
Check state of plants under cloches
      Check for wind damage

Sort out plans for what is going where - minor adjustments required - in progress
Start some alfalfa sprouts - done
Check state of plants under cloches - done, surprisingly not frozen solid
Check for wind damage - done, everything too weighed down round the edges by snow to blow about.

Also harvested a nice big carrot from the pot in the garage.

        Weekend jobs

At my friend's (colder than here and very likely to be frozen solid)
Check state of lettuces in greenhouse and hotbed cover
Possibly plant a couple of buckets of 1st early potatoes in greenhouse if compost not too cold

        At home
        Continue adjusting plans
Move apricot tree out of garage when temperature rises above freezing
Consider planting some 1st early potatoes in buckets under cloches and bubble wrap
        Pot up 2 tomato seedlings
        Sieve compost for carrots
Order another tunnel for potatoes at allotment (impressed with the 2 I have already)
        Harvest salads, leeks, parsnips

        At allotment
Stuff more snow into dustbins before it all melts
        Check hotbed
Bring horse muck for potato bed (only if thawed out underneath)
Chop weeds for compost if possible (unlikely)

        • Weekend jobs

          At my friend's
Check state of lettuces in greenhouse and hotbed cover - done, all ok
Possibly plant a couple of buckets of 1st early potatoes in greenhouse if compost not too cold - no

          At home
Continue adjusting plans - in progress
Move apricot tree out of garage when temperature rises above freezing - done (supposed not to freeze until Wed night, but keeping an eye on things)
Consider planting some 1st early potatoes in buckets under cloches and bubble wrap - no, sitting on my hands, but finding it difficult.
Pot up 2 tomato seedlings - done
Sieve compost for carrots - no
Order another tunnel for potatoes at allotment - done
Harvest salads, leeks, parsnips - done

Also moved 2 buckets of sieved compost out of garage and put them under a cloche in the veg cage area. These are ready to sow carrots in but I'm waiting a bit longer. I wanted the buckets out of the way as I can hardly move in the garage.
Sowed some red vein spinach in modules indoors (these were sown outside on 4th March last year but it was a tad warmer then).

          At allotment
Stuff more snow into dustbins before it all melts - done as much as I could
Check hotbed - done, still 10C
Bring horse muck for potato bed (only if thawed out underneath) - no, still frozen
Chop weeds for compost if possible (unlikely) - no, still frozen

          Monday jobs (work permitting)
Attempt to sort out garage a bit
          Sieve compost for carrots
Dig some compost out of bottom of hotbin for potatoes and store in garage
Put cover on blowaway that lives in the front garden
Sow some hardy annual flowers and put in blowaway.
Put stored onions and potatoes back in garage now its warmer.
          Harvest salads

Attempt to sort out garage a bit - done some
Sieve compost for carrots - no, bit wet
Dig some compost out of bottom of hotbin for potatoes and store in garage - done
Put cover on blowaway that lives in the front garden - done
Sow some hardy annual flowers and put in blowaway - done calendula
Put stored onions and potatoes back in garage now its warmer - done
              Harvest salads - no

It really was time I got stuck into things in the garden at home, and as the allotment was still very wet today was a good opportunity. As well as the above I also washed down the glass on the growhouse, moved the Meteor peas out of the growlight garden into the growhouse, pricked out some lettuce seedlings, moved the pot of compost that was growing fennel until recently from the fence side to behind the fruit cage for storage and replaced it with the apricot tree, moved the already sieved compost for carrots out of the garage into the pot in the fruit cage (to make room for the stuff out of the hotbin), moved the corn salad and the finished swede bucket out of the tunnel (it was the swede compost I was supposed to be sieving), moved the swede compost into a trug and planted 3 Arran Pilot potatoes in the swede bucket with suitable compost stored in the garage and put the potatoes on the hotbed in place of one of the buckets of brokali, wrapped in bubble wrap. It was noticeably warmer under the cover over the hotbed than anywhere else, even though the bed next to it still has a small amount of snow on it. I checked all the plants over - the only casualties seem to be some of the violas on the front fence. Ordered a pink blueberry plant.

I also walked down to the allotment and added the water/slush in the trugs to the dustbins, one of which is now full of water entirely from melted snow. I reckon I have saved about 150 litres of water by collecting snow last week.

              Tuesday jobs (work permitting)
Put up stakes and mesh support for Meteor peas
              Sow more hardy annual flowers
Take germinating beetroot to my friend's greenhouse
If possible, dig over fruit beds at allotment to remove more horsetail roots (may be too wet)
              Harvest salads, carrots, kohlrabi

                • Not so sure about organized...

                  Tuesday jobs
Put up stakes and mesh support for Meteor peas - done
Sow more hardy annual flowers - no, having trouble deciding what to sow
Take germinating beetroot to my friend's greenhouse - leaving 1 more day for plants to finish germinating
If possible, dig over fruit beds at allotment to remove more horsetail roots - far too wet but did some
Harvest salads, carrots, kohlrabi - done except kohlrabi

Also put up a cover over the raised beds at home ready for the potatoes, using a large plastic sheet that I found in the garage while looking for something else. Moved the apricot tree back into the garage for the night as temperatures are forecast to touch 0C. Garden is still under water in places so could be a slippery mess in the morning.

Wednesday jobs (work and weather permitting)
Sow more hardy annual flowers (decide what)
Sow Shirley tomatoes for the house
Take germinating beetroot to my friend's greenhouse
Plant Maris Bard potatoes at allotment
                  Attempt more digging at allotment
Harvest salads, carrots, kohlrabi or mizuna

                  • Today I plan to dig over a bed and get it ready for my potatoes. This will involve moving some dahlia tubers (two other lotmenteers have claimed some) and probably will pot those up. We shall see....

There, I've said it so I have to do it!

                      • Wednesday jobs
Sow more hardy annual flowers - done silene, godetia, cornflowers and gaillardia
Sow Shirley tomatoes for the house - done plus potted up 2 sideshoots. If all germinate I will have too many for the house.
Take germinating beetroot to my friend's greenhouse - done
Plant Maris Bard potatoes at allotment - done, plus a bucket of Lady C
Attempt more digging at allotment - done plus chopped a few more weeds
Harvest salads, carrots, kohlrabi or mizuna - done except kohlrabi. The mizuna is bolting and the flower shoots can be eaten like broccoli so I ate them before the flowers opened.

                        • Today will be more potting on of chillies. A small amount of chilli juggling (so everyone gets a go in the prime location ).
And finishing touches to a little something that I hope to reveal later.

                          • No gardening today, as often happens on a Thursday. In any case it snowed heavily this morning and then melted rapidly so everywhere is very soggy. I did manage to sow some replacement cabbage seeds as the ones I sowed a fortnight ago don't look to be germinating.

                            Friday jobs (work permitting)
Reorganize buckets under tunnel near hotbin and plant Lady C potatoes
Set up shelf at allotment and take down germinating peas (will be in a tray with a plastic cover)
                            Sow summer leeks
                            Harvest salads, carrots, brokali

                            • playing in the veggie garden today. Not got a clue what I'm doing, but it's not icy and it's not raining so I'm going outside.

                              • busy weekend on other stuff but I will pot on onions and leeks as well as a few flowers and start the next lot of seeds in the spare room. I need to move stuff from the spare room to the greenhouse now the worst of the cold has gone. Hopefully a blowaway inside the glasshouse will be double insulated enough for onions etc.
