Planting Old stock onion sets:)

I bought these yellow stickered onion sets yesterday. They're still firm and not sprouting. If they had been I'd have put my 25p back in my pocket! I'm not that daft!

My plan is to plant them closely in a pot and see what develops - hopefully "spring" onions in autumn!

Watch this space - and, if you spot some cheapy onions, or have some sets left from your spring planting, why don't you join me?

Last week I planted some very late shallots - I didn't realise how long it would take to clear the area they were going in, or I would have potted them up earlier. Oh well!

After a week about half of them have green tops, so better than nothing, I suppose If I get enough sets to replant next year - I'll be happy!

It's going to work. Did it last year and had a glut of spring onions from a cheap W1lk0s bag - SFG spacing of 144 onions per square foot.

I've been thinking the same, Lottie!
No harm in bunging them in and hoping for the best.
The packet says "Sow March onwards - Harvest July/August". That's a 4-5 month growing season.
So, if I plant in June they "should" harvest in October!
We'll see, I never have much joy with Red Onions anyway - they always seem to bolt. Maybe harvesting when the weather is cooler will slow them down?

fi they were to bolt,you will get some sort off nice flower heads,and maybe some seed to use as salad onions next year.

These are some left over sets I bought cheap earlier this year. Starting to bulb up now.

I put my sets in at the end of May. I have Sturon onions, Biztro and Red Gourmet shallots, all from the reduced aisle.
They're sprouting nicely now, as are my Cristo garlic cloves and Paris Silverskin seeds.

This is my first time growing onions. I still struggle to get my head around the fact I'm planting a single bulb and will harvest a single (albeit hopefully larger) bulb. It seems a bit ... redundant!

The Shallots and Garlic should (hopefully) give you more bulbs than you've put in

snowbunny, in the UK you would need to get your Shallots in by the end of Feb and the onions by the end of March as otherwise you wont get decent sized onions or shallots. However in Spain this is likely materially different!

I saw your post yesterday & it nudged me into planting my neglected spares,the same you've got! I bought them in case of any problem but didn't need them,plus space issues but thanks to your post I've found some space for them next to tomatoes & in a potato bag with old potato compost. In the second photo the newly planted onions are on the bottom right nearby the autumn planted ones.

I'm in the midst of weeding the overflow allium bed that I planted earlier this year. Hoping to be able to cram these in alongside them. First I need to remove the creeping buttercups Pesky things!

The ones in the ground have only been there a few days, unwatered and very hot
Wonder if you can eat cooked sets
