Strawberries Galore!!

Oh what fun this growing lark is! I am picking Strawberries just about every day now. If I eat any more I will look like a Strawberry! Can you ever get tired of Strawberries? Not on my watch you can't!

Lol, no you can never get fed up of good strawberries.

My neighbour gave me a few plants at the end of last year. Sadly they were just left in a planter through the winter with no attention. I bought a hanging bag in early May and re planted them in that and the thrived, plenty of flowers and fruit but still green. Well, to be honest there is one red one.....

To rub it in, my neighbour popped over last night with a plastic box crammed with gorgeous strawberries because they cannot eat them all...... He didn't appear too impressed with my one single red strawberry, in fact I swear he chuckled when he left....

Strawberries Galore!!

My Strawberry plants were purchased on a whim this time last year. The young man at the garden centre said at the time “you know you won’t get any fruit this year don’t you!” I said I was prepared to wait. He walked off with a little smirk on his face. Well the last laugh is on him. I may well have had to wait a year to get fruit but what an abundance of sweet tasting fruit I've got and its still coming!

All good things come to he who waits!!!!!

Home grown strawberries are great. You have to remember that there are different varieties which fruit at different times, and shade makes a difference too. For example I have:
Honeoye (early, sun) - plenty of red fruit.
Vibrant (early, shade) - some red fruit.
Marshmello (mid, sun and spent spring in the growhouse) - loads of red fruit
Marshmello (shade) - starting to produce red fruit
Elsanta (mid, shade) - starting to produce red fruit
Malwina (late, sun) - no red fruit yet
Buddy (perpetual, sun) - starting to produce red fruit
Just Add Cream (perpetual, sun) - one red fruit so far
Framberry (perpetual, shade) - only one plant has flowers so far.

The perpetuals should, in theory, go on producing intermittently until the first frosts.

Agreed. Having about 20 each day at the moment blended in a smoothie for breakfast

Todays Happy was sat in the sun dipping chilled fresh strawberries into a cold glass of Riesling......

I eat them on their own - no cream, no sugar, no alcohol, nothing. The best ones are undoubtedly Marshmello - when you get a really ripe one there is a huge burst of flavour and it would be a shame to add anything else to it.
