  • Kale glut help!

I have a glut of kale, totally amazed by what I'm harvesting in such a short space of time. Anyhow has anyone here frozen kale successfully? If so does it go soggy when you cook it?

    Thank you

We've also had loads of broad beans and peas and loads more to come, the runners look like well be having a glut and everything is just growing great, must be this lovely Lincolnshire soil,I've never had such good crops!

Your lucky, everything else in my garden seems to want kale , slugs, pigeons and no doubt cabbage whites.

I've only ever frozen it in curry form.

Sorry Mrs Wads, never frozen it but it uses lots making crispy fried seaweed (slowly frizzled in a wok rather than deep frying). Glad your new garden's doing so well.

Not frozen it myself mrswadders's as it all gets eaten here, though a friend said it freezes well though you will need to blanch it first.

I am new to Kale this year and got some 'Daubenton Kale', hoping it takes off and tastes good, its perrenial too which is nice.. should go nice in a curry as a substitute for spinach

Good to hear it's going so well for you I don't grow kale but I've froze some Brussels tops, plunged into boiling water for about 1 minute because they're just thin leaves, then straight into ice cold water, into a bag in the freezer. Steam cooking them works out well,I just use a bowl in the microwave with about a tablespoon of water & cover them with a plate, doesn't go soggy as its steamed out you know, definitely worth doing

I've found that black Tuscan kale freezes fine, cook it from frozen but dwarf kale seems to go mushy.

You can shred it, put it on a baking tray with a little oil and roast it. Makes it very crispy and uses loads. Some people sprinkle a little sugar on it.
